Default Honda Help = 750.00 Exhaust! WHA?

Alright, well my car is a 96 si or "ex".. My car has been making this odd rattle, so I went to an auto shop, they hosited it up and they said it will cost 750.00 dollars canadian to fix, I was under the lift at the same time, and he's being honest I need a new "bottom part of exhaust mainfold" i think it's called the tri- y, I need a new cat, we were looking at it and it's almost completely rusted the flanges are also almost rusted completly through, then futher down the line, where a lot of the noise is coming from my resonater, then further down the piping my exhaust is going also, the baffels are all worn out... so for all those pieces it's going to cost $750.00

How can I do this cheaper, i'm thinking maybe buy some random headers off of ebay, for maybe $100 bucks if I can find it, get a cat probably $200, the piping skip the resonater, and get some random 100 dollars exhaust do you think I could manage this? Will my idea work, any suggestions.... if I can do this for less then 500 dollars I will be happy, and to treat my self I will buy axel stands and a jack so I can do it my self

Thanks for all your help

fyi: all prices canadian

Yeah, IMO that's way too much. You should be able to piece together a system for less. to save some more money, look for used stuff too.

Sorry to say but that sounds about right. The cat is whats killing the price. OBD2 cats are an arm and leg, even aftermarket. If they could just take it off have them do that and it would be extremely cheaper.

they are expensive, but I rather have one..... then not have one all all... I would have to say the pro's out way the cons...

pro - better for the enviorment, not illegal.. lowers the exhaust tone
con - expensive

i'm not poor, but 750.00 for a new exhaust is crazy I'm almost 1/5's of my way to buying my car again

I got my OBDII cat for my 96 EX at napa for about $80 US. Suposedly a direct replacement. I ended up returning it because I freed the bolts stuck on the stock one.

But overall, thats the high point of the exhaust.

you guys keep thinking i'm getting ripped off, i'm not just getting a cat-back exhaust for 750.00, if I were to do it it would be mid-exhaust manifold back, including everything, cat, exhaust, resonater yadda yadda

for 650.00 american, it's not that bad... <-- installed

but I know I can do it cheaper

Actually, I think that's a pretty good price for those parts and all the labor.

I wouldnt say your getting ripped off. In canadian that is close to accurate. OEM aftermarket generall costs less than Aftermarket performance, even on ebay.

full oem style exhaust is going to run you about 200-250 canadian, plus 200 for a cat, and then you neeed the down pipe. Plus labor.

It's not a bad price, probably normal.

Now is your chance to do some upgrades if you like. Exhausts arn't hard to do, just dirty and anoying when it is all rusted.
Save the labor costs and spend it on aftermarket performance, then DIY

just do some research and piece it together your self, get some used or new headers on ebay, a universal cat (obdII of course) and a universal muffler, then take it to a muffler shop and have them weld up your piping. that should be way cheaper

Definately don't do it! I know it is a fair bit different but I only paid $200 CAD for 2.5" pipe custom bent and a universal muffler. This was at a shop an hour north of you in Peterborough.

what's the name of the shop.. my gal lives in peterborough

and no point of doing any aftermaket upgrades, for my exhaust it's a stock motor with 228000km, when I get my swap I will but till then, this engine is purely just gonna be maintained...
