i went to les schwab today expecting to just need a alignment and it turns out they said i need new tie rods and cv axle before i can get it aligned.

is their anywhere i can buy these parts way cheaper online and jsut pay them for install or is this a fairly easy diy?

otherwise i think i will just sell the car, it's not really in good enough condition to where i want to dump money into it.

Get new tierod ends from Rockauto.com. The Moog brand ones are what I got. They're really nice and have a serviceable grease fitting which should extend the life of them. Axles I get for 60 bucks locally. But I don't know why you would need to new axles to get an alignment? Unless the boots are torn or one is bent or something.

Axle doesnt have anything to do with alignment. The position of the hub is determined by the control arms. It can be done yourself with a large breaker bar/impact wrench, long prybar, jack and jackstands. And wrenches for the tie rods. Tie rods are simple you just hold the jam nut with a wrench and break loose the tie rod, then install new one and get it aligned. Axle you have to break the nut loose with car on the ground. Then raise it, pop lower ball joint loose, pry the axle out of trans. (drain fluid first) and replace.

im not sure why either, all the guy at les schwab said was, that my tie rods inner and outter had quite a bit of play in them and i should replace them and that my passenger side axle was in pretty bad shape.

how would i go about checking the condition of the axle myself?

Does it make popping sounds when you turn? Is it bent? Are the boots torn or leaking grease? You can get autozone axles lifetime replacement. But I hear they are really crappy.

autozone axles are fine if its just a daily driver with no hard acceleration or racing.

I use nothing but Autozone. reason being, I have a lifetime warranty on all of my axles now . They are just fine, I have had no problems with any of them other than the fact that they break when put under heavy load JUST LIKE ANY THING WILL. You may run into this discussion with people as well.

Their argument: Why not just get stronger axles (like 400whp ones) if you are breaking axles. Which on the surface makes sense, but if there is going to be give I want it to be the axles that I have a lifetime warranty on. Why break a tranny over an axle? Ya digg?
