Help with vtec head swap d15b7
Ok I have a jdm d15b thats vtec with a messed up block. I have a 8 valve d15b7 that is in good condition. I understand that i need a z1 timing belt and have to add a vtec dowel pin? Can someone post a link to a pic on that?
Are there any differences between the strength of the b7 block compared to the d15b block? Are the rods still considered to be good to 200hp?

Re: Help with vtec head swap d15b7
It makes me wonder, correct me if I'm wrong. It seems like I remember digging around to find that there was at least 2 types of "jdm d15b vtecs" for those years, one being a 3stage vtec, one is the vtec-E, I can't remember all the details because it is really hard to get good info on those motors and you'll find lots of arguements about them. But lets assume that you have the vtec-e style=Z1 usdm, then I would say from everything I've ran across which would lead me to believe that your head would make a crappy add on to any other block because of the small ports (if the jdm and usdm vtec-e are the same), however the 3stage vtec head may be a completely different story. I don't know anything about the b7 but you can prolly find more on it by searching mini-me swaps.
Warning: I really don't know jack and I take no responsibility on giving info that may be slightly impaired. I'm the newest newb eva but it's shake and bake and I helped.
Good Luck hope you get it goin on

Re: Help with vtec head swap d15b7
If its an OBD1 D15B Vtec, its basically a Z6 head, and IIRC on a D15B7/D15B8 block requires a Z6 belt (on the original engine it requires a Z1 VX belt.) along with a Z6 tensioner.
Rods are weaker, D15B Vtec uses a unique to it crank with Z6 sized rod journals and D15B7 sized main journals. It also uses Z6 rods. You will need to pull the oil jet between cylinders 2 and 3.

Re: Help with vtec head swap d15b7
Ok I have the 130hp d15b vtec (no stages just one vtec solenoid). Its my buddies motor and he completely broke the rods on cylinders one and two from spraying a 75 shot. I trust u a lot eg8 but I had someone on carolina hondas (they know there ****) say that I needed the pistons from a 16 valve motor in order for the valves to clear. whats IIRC? So ur saying its a direct swap I just need to pull the oil sprayers on cyl 2 and 3 due to rod clearance im assuming? Im going to go get u guys some pics cause its funny as hell, just dont know how the head escaped without any damage haha

Re: Help with vtec head swap d15b7
Its just one jet, its not an oil squirter at the top of the block, its directly below the head. If its a D15B7 its already 16 valve, if its a D15B8 then it'll be 8 valve, some of the D15B8s had the extra valve reliefs cut in the pistons, apparently some didn't, the only real way to check is to pull the head.

Re: Help with vtec head swap d15b7
Yes. That is some wicked destruction btw
They did in fact have a regular D15B vtec, these were OBD1, i'm running one in my sedan right now, Z6 head with essentially a Z1 block Z6 rods and unique crank and pistons, cam is also supposed to be a little more agressive than a Z6.
3 stage is OBD2 and there was an OBD1 vtec version thats identical to a D15Z1 VX engine.

Re: Help with vtec head swap d15b7
im assuming the motor pictured was the regular d15b that eg currently has in his sedan. Yeah it took me years to learn all the different b's and what u could do with them, now Im going backwards and tryin to learn all the different d combos......i should b learnin K's haha but im broke so D's it is.
Say I decide to use this b8 to build for boost and run eagle rods vitara piston combo. Could I do that with z6 style eagle rods and pistons or are the cranks different? Could I use a z6 crank and oil pump on the b7 block along with the vitara combo with a z6 head? Would this not b a good idea?

Should i run the vtec oil pump too? The crank still turns so it seems like it might work, of course il have to get it checked out.

Re: Help with vtec head swap d15b7
i dont think the bearings r spun the rods broke in two. The bottom portion is still on the crank spinnin freely. I also dont think the pump had much time to pick up any metal but I guess i could just use the pump off of my z6 or is the b8 pump adaquate?

You'll have to run the B8 pump, Z6 pump wont work, due to the crank being smaller, thats whats cool about the D15B vtec crank, Z6 rod journals, D15B7/D15B8 main journals.

Re: Help with vtec head swap d15b7
bro i can almos guarantee that head has bent valves and or is warped beyond belief
second.. a b7 is not an 8 valve
third..i would highly suggest you do NOT use a b7 block the rods are like toothpicks
in my first eg i went through a few of those blocks racing around w my z6 head ha but anyway i would go for iether an A6 or Z6 or even a d15b they seem to be fairly strong for stock motors

Well it doesnt have any bent valve and its not warped beyond beleif. Yes weve established the 8 valve is the b8. We had a d15b and now need a cheap replacement block for it.

imho i wouldn't do a minime. i speak from experiance. you could sell that cylinder head for $150 no prob, and pick up a d16z6 for $300 and it will always be stronger than the d15.

Re: Help with vtec head swap d15b7
Ok tell me from ur own experiance y ur against a minime? Iv been told the rods are the exact same beefiness haha if thats a word. If u had all the parts and didnt need to purchase anything, would u still chose a z6 block even though itl cost 200+? Sorry for gettin the blocks mixed up....I HAVE A B8 BLOCK
