Icon2 <HELP> My 1999 Honda Civic LX "CRACKED" Exhaust Manifold ISSUE! <HELP>

So my parents Mint 1999 Honda Civic LX recently had a engine light pop up late February this year. There was the oxygen sensor that went out. So they had it replaced at their local repair facility and they discovered the Exhausted Manifold has a small crack in the threads. So this needs to be replaced to avoid further issues. They have since given me the civic as my daily driver and purchased another 2013 Honda Civic. I just obtained the vehicle and getting ready to fix a few issues.

I've read about the 14year/150,000 extended emissions warranty but I'm just out side the 14 years with 96,230 miles on it. So I'm not covered for 2 reasons.

1. I'm outside the 14 years but the problem is documented by my mechanic just before the 14 year mark. So am I covered legally? This car was originally purchased on March 8th 1999 and the problem was fixed earlier this year on March 1st 2013. 7 days shy of the 14 years.

2. I went to my Local Honda and they asked if the MIL (Engine Light) Cel was on. I responded no as the problem was fixed by a local mechanic. So the MIL light is not on. However the crack is still there with a failing Exhaust manifold.

I decided that perhaps I will not be lucky in getting this done by Honda. I'm pissed the LX has the exhaust manifold connected to Catalytic Converter, thus making it a more expensive repair. I've searched on here for people stating to replace it with the EX set up. However this could be caught at a local Smog shop if they discover the change.

I searched on Ebay and online to find after market products to replace the issues. What do you guys think?

This is being sold by a local shop. Is this a good replacement? Please point me in the right direction as I'd like to address the issue and keep this Honda as mint as it is. I want to keep it stock and pristine.

Here is the aftermarket set up I found with the link below. I added the description as well.

I didn't think the 99 Civic was covered under the 14-year extended warranty.

Post a picture of the crack in the manifold. Was/is it throwing code P0171? Is it creating an exhaust leak?

^ I don't have the picture as the mechanic was the one who saw it. He stated its in the threads and the car can be driven but will need to be replaced. I just got the vehicle 2 weeks ago and don't have time at the moment to take things apart.

The Code it was throwing was P0135 Heater Circuit Malfunction Bank 1 Sensor 1

Its not the P0171 code.

Anything else I should look for?

Wouldn't you want to verify that there really is a problem before replacing?

^Possibly but its a family mechanic and he is/has been always honest. He stated its cracked and should be replaced sometime in the future. He stated we can drive it for some time now before doing so.

I was trying to jump the gun before I start doing the tune up on it. Figured I'd start researching it but you're right. I better check it out with my own eyes.

I love working and wrenching on my truck but this civic, I'm lazy. . . LOL

Yeah, removing the O2 sensor and inspecting the bung should not be difficult.

And if there's an exhaust leak at that location, it will make the engine run rich. How's the gas mileage? Does an emissions test show high HC levels?

^Thanks for your time in helping me out.

Don't think its running rich and MPG seems to be around 28-30mpg with mix driving. Not too sure as I just got the car.

Looking to not wear down my truck and jump from 14mpg to 30ish. . .

Are you required to have an emissions test at some point? That would tell you whether there's a problem.

Also monitor your gas mileage and inspect bung.

If all are fine, I would not see a need to replace the cat/manifold.

The mileage you report above is about right for an auto. You might be able to get a few more mpg by driving like grandpa, but not much more.

Low 30s is about average depending on driver. As long as a tune up is preformed and tires are good. Alignment etc

^ Thanks guys. I will be changing out the spark plugs, oil, coolant, hoses (14 years), and air/cabin filters this or next weekend.

Hopefully I will run a full tank now and compare it to a full tank after the tune up.

This Honda is a champ for sure. No power but it saves me a lot of money at the gas station. My parents new 2013 Civic is incredible compared to this 1999. LOL.

I have a '97 LX, and it had a crack right at the "Y" of the exhaust manifold when I got it. Ended up replacing the entire assembly (exhaust manifold and catalytic converter are connected). I just got one off of eBay for $180 shipped, and it is an off-brand but looks almost identical to the original one, and I've had it on for 32,000 miles so far with no troubles. That's the route I'd go if I were you. Inexpensive enough, and super easy to do as well.
