HELP! differences between '98 and '99 civic ex engine wiring harnesses??
iam doing an engine swap for a friend, his '98 ex threw a rod, and he bought a '99ex parts car, and when i pulled the motors from the 2 cars, i disconnected the the harness from the ecu, and left the harnesses attached to the engines, and i noticed the plugs are different where they plug into the ecu, so my question is, can i swap the '99 ecu into the '98, or do i need to use the '98 ecu and harness, and if so, are all the sensors and distributor, etc. the same?

Just use the 98 harness and 98 ecu for the 98 car. Did the 99 harness have an extra plug under the dash going into the ecu?

Chances are it was removed.
It's hard to find a parts car with the ECU still in it, especially in terms of Acuras and Hondas. I don't think I've ever seen a honda/acura in a junk yard with the ECU still in it. People raid that **** like gold. They're easy to remove, and worth 100 easy.

I would just swap the harness off the 98 motor and use it with the right ecu. it only takes a few minutes to remove a harness of hondas so just save yourself a little cash so you dont have to buy the jumper harness.

Re: (D1SKOOLBUS)
options..
1. put the 98 harness on the 99 motor with a 98 ecu.
2. 99 motor ecu and harness
3. 99 motor 99 harrnes 98 ecu with obd2b-obd2a jumper harness

STOP!
The conversion harness will not work!
I know it wont because I did the same with my car. 97 Coupe, blown motor switched a OBD2B wired B16A2 and everything clicked nice until the green plug had half the wires that my car does.
Tried buying harness and all that stuff. Diffrent ECU's bla nothing work until friend said man your using the wrong harness. We changed it car turned on and gauges work RPM everything.
Nope the 99 is OBD2B and wont comply with the vehichle of 96-98 because its OBD2A. Car will start and work. No gauges, no tach, no speedo no bla bla bla. To much hassle CEL will be on. Why because the harness that connects to the vehicles interior harness dont match up.
The plugs will be the same. Everything will match up. Everything is OBD2 but the only plug that wont work on the 99 harness with the 98 car is the one near the ECU that is green. The 99 will have diffrent wires in diffrent locations that the matching of the 98.
Easy way with no cost.
Remove the 98 Harness from the motor. Both motors are still outside as I presume. Start from left to right facing the intake manifold. Crank Fluctuation Sensor, Knock, Alternator, Injectors, all the way down to the right by Vtec Solinoid, Thermostat, TPS, Starter wire, just take on plug look at the colors on the harness and plug it in so you dont get plugs confused. By the time you drop the motor in the car everything is basically 98! Whalla no CEL, gauges work everything is nice and unless the motor has a bad IAVC nice idle, or you didnt get plugs everything will run on the 98 P2P.
THIS MIGHT ONLY BE ON INTEGRA MOTOR! Im not sure if it was because it was OBD2B or Integra. Single cam wise they might they might not. Plus the Crank Fluctuation Sensor is right under the Alternator near the Timing Belt cover.
P.S The only plug that might not work is the Crank Fluctuation Sensor. On my B18C the plugs didnt fit but looked similar. Nor the wires were the same color. I pulled up the diagrams. On the motor the sensor has a blue wire and a white wire. On the 97 Harnes the plug has 3 wires. I believe the harness has White wire with Red Stripe or Vice versa and a Blue Wire with Red Stripe or Vice Versa. Cant remember. But if this is the case the WHT/RED connects with the White wire and the BLU/RED connects with the Blue wire. Very easy and the Brown is a ground. I just cut it and CEL went away.

Re: (PhatBoy5015)
It's as simple as this: Whichever generation OBD2 Civic you have, is also which wire harness you WILL use. Keep OBD2a harnesses out of OBD2b cars and vice versa.

Re: HELP! differences between '98 and '99 civic ex engine wiring harnesses??
dash harness is probably different in the 99-00 and the 99 harness will not work
his option is to get a 96-98 engine harness and run the 96-98 ecu ONLY

No, the engine is coming out of a '98 and going into a '99. Therefore it needs a '99 - '00 engine harness, distributor and ECU.
