hey i just pickd up a ej1 coupe and swapd a 98 jdm b16a with a gsr tranny
ok i was wondering what cams should i go with i have a bnm fpr and aem fuel rail, p30 pistons,
and bolt ons also i have type r valve train...my goals for right now is to have a fast DD and once i get the cams i plan on getting it tune'd but later i plan on building a race motor..so yeah any opinions on what cams i should go with and why would be good thanks

does it really matter? just look around for something "mild" to "streetable" and get a good tune.

You can get used Skunk2 tuner cams for around $300. I got skunk2 tuner stage 2 cams with S2 cam gears for $400. If you're going to get it tuned after the cams (which you should...I don't understand why people install cams and don't get a tune), you should seriously consider getting cam gears to get the most out of your cams.

Yes, he would, unless the Type R valve train supports more aggressive cams than stage 1 cams (I don't think it does, but somebody correct me if I'm wrong). He could go with stage ones without upgrading them. If he wants cams more aggressive than that, definitely a valve train upgrade is in order, and that would put the OP out of the $300 max he's set.

Upgrading the valve train for stage 2 cams is a good idea.

I like to use Port Flow for the VT.

If cash is the issue, why not CTR cams for a mild build?

i was thinking about ctr but arnt they the same as skunk2 stage1? or which is better? cause ive seen skunk2 stage 2's for 250 b4

i belive that they do, they are dual springs, so i would assume they could hold a stage 2 cam just fine.

they might be the same i have no idea, but im sure you could get them cheeper then the skunk2 cams

If you have a type r valvetrain shouldn't you have the type r cams? Why not just stick with those? Skunk 2 stg 2 cams aren't gonna give you gigantic increases in hp. Save your pennies and stroke that little b16 and get some more torque you will feel that more than some stg 2 cams. Or get a b20 block and strap on that type r valvetrain with a good tune now you're talking

Get the Type-R cams and you will be very happy, if you put the Skunk2 stage 2 cams you will then need a higher compression set up to see the performance in the cams, so what you have with the Type-R cams will be the best thing to go with and make lots of difference.

so ok ctr sounds nice for now i had a b20v i made a mistake by letting a friend torque my head down he didnt do it right and i do wonder how it would have came out if it was done right so i might do that with cams..but as for now i have one other question my car is running rich and i was thinking can it be cause of my fuel rail? i have a aem fuel rail

I would find a set of 00-01 ITR spec cams or CTR cams and call it good till you have the money to build the head completely for some big aggressive cams, and also for when you have a healthier motor (higher compression) to make use of the larger cams and make the power that is possible from them.
A set of adjustable cam gears will also yeild a few extra ponies if you have cam timing done with the tune as well.

The B&M pressure regulator is probably to blame for being rich. Crane Stg 1s are like CTR cams, but a more aggressive VTEC lobe (awesome for boost).

If you stick with factory cams, you can use GSR intake springs for the exhaust and just buy new intake springs. Factory retainers are fine and will last longer than titanium ones.

More aggressive cams requiring stronger springs will wear out faster. This is part of why factory cams aren't that aggressive. Now depending how long you plan to keep the motor running, this may or may not be of any concern.

any upgrade you make to that motor will not compensate for the longer gears with the gsr trans....that being said, the upgraded fuel rail and fpr aren't going to accomplish alot considering youre still squeezing the same amount of fuel through the stock injectors....unless you've cranked the fuel pressure up. P30 pistons? those are stock b16 pistons. and stage 2 is a pretty generic term...theres a big difference in sknk2 stage 2 tuner cams and stage 2 pro cams...

well i guess im going a different route i got a complete turbo kit from my friend for 400 so yeah thats the way im going for now
