Help with a d15b swap... ecu compatable?
I bought a 95 civic coup that had had the engine exchanged for a d15b (non vtec).
I dont know alot about hondas and apparently nether did the kid who swapped the engine.
it tops out at low RPMs (I dont know how many, as it doesn't have a tachometer) and top speed is about 49 mph (gains about 10 mph per gear shift).
when I hook the map sensor up it doesnt run properly, and I cant plug up the o2 sensor because the plug on the wiring harness has 4 connectors and the o2 sensor has only 1 wire.
It has a p06 ECU (no mods) and I am wondering if this is at all compatible with a D15B non vtec 5-speed engine.
any help is appreciated,
DK

Yes the P06 ecu comes from the 92-95 D15 non-VTEC motors. Check what exact D15B you have on the little tab on the block near the tranny. HOpefully you don't have the 8-valve CX motor, or the old D15B2 from OBD0 which is suspect because those only had a 1-wire O2.
You will need a 4-wire O2 sensor though to ever get it smoothed out, so start there. I have a spare if you're interested.

Re: (klungemonger)
Ok, I appreciate the offer, but I didn't want to wait for shipping, so I checked at the local junk yard and they had one. now I plug it up, plugged up the map sensor and the vacuum module (bolted to the back side of the intake manifold) and still it is no better... possibly worse. there are still a couple of "mystery plugs"... there is one that seems it should pug into something on the underside of the rubber intake boot (it seems like there might be a broken sensor there?) and another jimmy-rigged plug that i've been told plugs into the angle sensor (on the back side of the throttle body) but it has 3 connectors and the sensor only has two. Like I said, I really don't know the significance of any of these plugs, but I would have to say that there is still something that isnt working, even after the o2 sensor was changed out.

Re: (klickster)
did they use the right wiring harness?? that many wires and connectors kinda sounds like and obd-2 wiring harness. the kid who swapped that motor is a complete dumbass because all of the coupes/sedans come with a d15b7 (which is a 16 valve head with about 105 hp) and the hatches come with a d15b8 (which is 8 valve 70 hp....and i have one of them). the guy should have done a real swap....like a b series or at least another d series with vtec. and the b8 dont top at 49 mph, in fact its exactly the opposite. the gear ratios are set up for economy which means that you do not shift from 4th to 5th until 149 mph (completely pegged the expletive out). and you should probably swap that motor for at least d15b7.

Under the # D15B is the #2437606....
it doesn't say which d15b engine it is... that I can tell.
The head does say "16 valve"
and the kid was telling me that it would be good to put a b series engine in it, but I don't have the funds for that, I will be happy to just get it running properly. As to why he didn't do that in the 1st place, I assume that he already knew he wanted to get rid of the car before he put the replacement engine in it and bought the cheapest thing he could find on ebay...

Re: (klickster)
so it says d15 on the block right next to the tranny? if thats all it says then it is a jdm d15 which means that it is a d15 vtec motor. but if not then you have the 16 valve head d15 which is not too bad.

it says d15b on the block right next to the tranny with no other numbers or letters in this string. underneath that there is another string of numbers...possibly a vin#? and below that is a sticker with a different # and a barcode, but the d15 number only says "d15b"
I was told that it is non-vtec and the head cover simply says "16 valve honda"
