u know that sound when u turn ur key after ur car is already started. my car is making that sound when i crank it or turn it on. what is it? how can i fix it? ..thanks

when u crank ur car to turn it on.. it makes that sound, but at the same time, its making that sound when ur car is already on and u turn the key. it starts fine and the noise goes away when im not turning the key ne more.

He means when your car is already on.
If you try to turn the key to the start position it will make a grindy vibration noise. Obviously this sounds like a starter problem, try a differant one

In the past if a starter continues to turn even after the car is started, I have been able to fix it by either just replacing the starter solenoid (piggybacked on the starter itself) or replace the entire starter (which is probably a good idea, cause you have probably ground down the starter gear a little by now). Either way let us know what happens

i dont hear it after it starts though. damn i think i gotta replace the starter then.

Even if it does right before or while your cranking I would guess that the starter gear is stripped and youu will need to replace the whole starter. It's not that bad I think there like $100 plus you get a core return. And the replacment time on it is like 30 mins.

ok i replaced th starter and the cap and rotor. but when i went to my car my battery was dead. so i replaced the starter cap and rotor.. then.... i jump started it. and now the car wont crank and all im getting is the grinding sound. all i get is grinds. what do i do now? thanks.

or you starter needs to be lubed. My car did it when it's cold outside, so I took the starter apart and lubed the mechanism.

bump, anyone else im really stuck. if it helps i drove from san diego to la and back driving pretty fast and all of this started happening the next day.
