Headlight Restoration
Im trying to avoid paying 50+ to someone to restore my headlights, so im wondering what proven techniques you guys have used to get these lights clear. Im tryin to not buy new headlights, so let me know whats the best things out there I can get. I dont have a power buffer, so This will be all elbow power!
I appreciate you guys, always great information!

Re: Headlight Restoration
go to your local autozone or similar store, or even a walmart. Somewhere they will have headlight restoration kits that you can use on your lights that work rather well and include the sealent so they dont re yellow immediately. I used the $20 kit from walmart on a 97 Nissan Altima and it worked great and only took about 40 minutes total.

Mothers makes one that includes the ball, the solution, and something else. it retails at O'Reilly for 24.99. They have a sale going on for 14.99 on it now, and includes a second bottle of the solution. you should try that first. if not, i think someone here has a DIY wetsand method that came out great.

Re: Headlight Restoration
I had an extra pair of integra headlights in my garage and they were hazey. I noticed that if they were wet they looked good tho. So I got some 1200 grit paper and wetsanded them, then dryed them, then sprayed them with a clear lacquer and they came out amazing. U just spray a very light layer on them. To much with make them run.
I may write a diy if I do it to the other side.

Re: Headlight Restoration
Yeah basically the kits are just fine grit sandpaper and a sealent so you can search around for the best price or go to the hardware store and make your own kit. Essentially whichever method you choose your just lightly sanding off the top layer of the lense until its clear again and then sealing it.

ive used the crystal view or whatever its called...found in a shiny silver pouch. I think you can find it at autozone or advance. Great results with this kit

Plastic polish, elbow grease, and a followup in about a year when they start to yellow again. I hate plastic lamps, which is why I refuse to swap my glass lamps for JDM lamps to just to be cool.

Re: Headlight Restoration
Where do i get sealant? I can pick up some sandpaper, but I heard you need to get some type of compound, rather than just sandpaper directly on the lens itself. But after I've gotten it clear, I put the compound to keep it from going yellow again.. gotcha..

I dont have a drill accessable, to that kit wont work for me. I'm going to walmart to get some sandpaper but I dont know what type of polish to use once they are clear... to seal it. Would it be called plastic sealant or something?

Re: Headlight Restoration
Here's what I did. I made my yellow, cloudy civic headlights i bought from a junkyard look brand spankin' new. Its a little time consuming, i'd say about 1hr or so but it's well worth it.
Here's the materials I used:
800 grit, 1500 grit, 2000 grit sand paper
Blue Magic Headlight Lens cleaner. It polishes and protects
3M Headlight Restoration kit (you'll need a drill for this one)
I started by wet-sanding my headlights with 800, 1500 then 2000 grit sandpaper, rinsing between sandpapers. Took about 35-40 mins. After this, your headlights will look a little milky and hazy so thats when I used the lens cleaner on there. 2 coats and they're starting to look good.
Now the next step is optional but i did it to make sure my headlights are blingin'. After polishing my headlights, i used the 3M restoration kit on my headlights. Now some of you might say its overkill but whatever. After using the 3M restoration kit, i applied 3 coats of Blue Magic Lens Cleaner and DONE! My headlights look brand spankin' new and it still does even after 9 months ( and a grueling midwest winter). It's my tried and proven method and i'll even show you pics of it if you need it

Re: Headlight Restoration
my bro said "i just sand them down and poslish them with buffing compound....i havent found a good sealer to use. i just go over it last with an acrylic paint sealant"
that was 2 texts he sent me so im just guessing he uses them two products. so i hope that helps. but he uses a buffer so good luck
