Default head light question.

why do newer model hondas in particular have clearer headlight covers than older ones? like the pics below of my 95 delsol, the headlight is clear, but the glass has lines and patterns on it, unlike the 2002 crv for example(shown below). i was wondering if there was a conversion of some sort to change the headlight lense to something like the newer style clear lenses without the lines and patterns on it.

here's the picture of 95 del sol.

and here's the picture of 2002 crv.

it probably has something to do with the beam pattern. my 97 civic has the clear headlights, while my dads 02 s430 has the lines in the headlights, like your sol.

Ok, here's the deal as far as I understand it... the earlier (IE, considering 5th gen as "earlier" and 6th gen as "later) headlights were smaller compared to the later ones, thus they need the lines and patterns in the glass to get a good beam pattern out of a smaller size lense. Since the later headlights were much larger, they have more area for the reflective piece inside, thus they do not need lines to refract the light on the lense, and can use clear lenses.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure this is the case, unless you're using projectors or HID's or something, which are different altogether (mostly).

if u remove the the lense from a 5th gen headlight, you'll see that the reflective piece is flat. now take a look at those aftermarket lights as well as 6th gen civics. the reflective pieces are multi surfaced. the reflective surface is what spreads the light. in the 5th gen, the lines on the lens itself is what spreads out the light.
