Anyone have this problem ?
My gf's 97 civic sedan shifts really hard from first to 2nd gear seems to be the worst but it kicks like a pressure release thru 2nd to 3rd and so on
Fluid is good. Car has 160k to 170k on it completely stock

but only at 3,000+ rpms. Pretty much 1/3+ throttle opening and the shifts shake the car.

but if I drive really slow, I can barely notice the shifts. You might wanna drain/fill the fluid anyway, even if it looks good. Unless you changed the axles recently or something and already did it.

96-00 Civic AT's are problematic. My friend's girl had a daily that shifted so hard it was scary. Start saving for a new one/rebuild kit.

do a manual swap and torture her with stick shift lessons and forcing her to install a new clutch herself if she kills it. Problem solved, no more Honda autotragic problems ever again.

Looks like the automatics of the 96-00 generation are just a wee bit more complicated than the 92-95.

When looking at the FSM the only two things that is consistent for harsh upshift in all gears is the mainshaft sensor and the countershaft sensor.

If it is predominately just first to second then there is a whole whack of things it could be including defective lock up solenoid valve A etc.

Google FSM for your year car and see if you can't get a hold of one. It looks to be a much larger job to diagnose your 6th gen tranny than it is for the 5th gen.
