When in a higher rpm (in vtec) my 3rd gear grinds if I try to shift it in quick.

I have heard syncros..

you have 2 choices if its internals getting worn , fix it now for a few hundred bucks , or get a whole new one eventually. which is more than a few hundred.

Talk to Bense, he is the transmission MASTER. I wouldn't mind seeing what his response is in this forum. I'd like to look over all the tranny solutions he has before I rebuild mine this summer. Good luck dude. In my naivity, I'd go ahead and say synchros, but that's dependent on how you drive.

who cares about that... its 5th gear... if ur car is stock that means ur not racing it and u can manage without 5th gear daily driving... drive it till the tranny goes................ but im just curious how does ur 5th gear start to grind before 1,2, or 3???? u use 1,2 and 3 waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyy yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more then 5th

if you were in the orlando fl area i would be happy to fix it for you. but just take care of the problem now before it gets worse.

If you go to http://auto.howstuffworks.com/transmission.htm and read up on manual transmissions, you'll see that it's probably your syncro that's gone, or the position of the shift forks that's all. There's a video there of a mechanic showing a honda manual transmission. Open up the tranny and rent a gear puller to remove/replace the bad syncro. Heck you can even replace the shaft/countershaft bearings. After seeing how simple it is, I would never buy an automatic!!!

When you go from 2nd to 3rd and from 4th to 5th, you are disconnecting one syncro and reconnecting another with 2 different shift forks inside the tranny. Maybe try double clutching - i.e. when you shift from 4th to 5th, shift to neutral in between and rev up to match the engine with the wheels for 5th gear and let out the clutch. Then shift into 5th from neutral. See if the grinding stops that way.

Hmmm could be a bent shift fork or the mechanism that changes the forks.

better than my prob i grind going into 3rd in higher rpms but i have a d series so i can get a tranny for pract6ically free

on the other hand does anyone have the reverse problem if i go to put it in reverse it wont go all the way into gear so if you let out the clutch you hear it grind i have to go from 1st to 5th to reverse for it to go in on the first shot

i had this problem when my car was stock as well. actually when i had very little miles on it, first few months of having the car.

i would shift into 5th around 80mph and the bitch would grind .. no matter how slow i did it. Took it to the dealer and they said that b/c i was going above the speed limit that the car wasn't suppose to go that high and that they woudln't fix it. POS dealers..

neways, the grinding went away soon after and i didnt' worry about it. I have 115K on my EM1 and the tranny although having some upgrades does not have a rebuild. hope this helps

No offense, but there's almost no reason to double clutch when upshifting. You don't rev up to upshift, the RPMs drop, so you have to let the engine rev down. You double clutch to downshift, so as to rev match when putting it into a lower gear.

I too have a slight grind in fifth gear, but that only happens when I shift too fast. It's definitely the synchro that's bad... too bad I got the tranny used. But I will be pulling the tranny off soon for something else (tob) so maybe I'll go ahead and take care of that at the same time

1st to 5th to R? Sounds like a bit more than necessary since you only need one synchro'd gear to match the input. Try dropping it down into 4th, then up, over, and back down into R. That's what I had to with my gf's civic and worked like a charm.

When your shifting up from 7000-8000 RPMs in 4th to 5th, you'll definitely need to rev up the engine. Although, there is definitely more of a need when you shift down.

Which gear for 5th are you running?

Like I said, I have a worn 5th gear synchro also, which I noticed when I got the tranny. I shift at 8000 in 4th into 5th with no double clutching and no grind. And that's with a short shifter -- it's about timing, not jamming the damn thing into gear too soon.
