good cruising rpm

good cruising rpm
What is a good cruising rpm? my car is a 94 civic dx sedan manual....i usually cruise between 2000-2500 rpm. Is that good or bad? I've always wondered because in other cars that i've driven around (all being automatic) the rpms were always down between 1500-2000 rpms. I'm not hurting my engine or anything while crusing around at 2000-2500 rpms am i?

These engines are made for Revs... your fine. I cruse in 5th gear @80-85mph and thats a bit over 3k rpms. Heck the engine doesn't make much power untill 4 and peak at 6800rpm. Thats a D16Y8 though...but still...your fine.

Cruising RPM is mostly a matter of preference and the engine's torque curve. My grandmother's 2000 Camry cruises at like 900rpm, so in contrast my civic seems like it's always over-revving. But that just highlights the difference in torque between a 2.2l and a 1.6l.
Also, cruising rpm has an effect on gas mileage. So in our civics, 5th gear by 40mph is great on gas, but don't expect to go up a hill or pass anybody without downshifting.

huh? i go up hills at 40mph and pass people easily all the time in 5th gear. speak for your own Civic.
Anyway, to add something obvious to all of the information here, cruising RPM is also largely determined by the transmission (i.e. gear ratios, final drive ratio). And to the original thread-starter, 2000-2500 sounds good. And if you ever go B-series, you will really learn to appreciate that.

Re: (Screwtape:)
It depends on what you mean by cruising, on the freeway or the streets. between 2500 and 3000 is not bad but, I'll tend to stay closer to 3000 and shift at 3500 on the streets, on the freeway doowhatchalike just remember 2000 to 2500 in fifth gear is a heavier load on the engine.

Yeah it may sound like your hurting your engine. Cmon these are japanese designed
motors their made for high rpms. ive had my
motor for 4 years now and my driving on the street has been to 3k on 3rd and 4k on 4th on the freeway with normal traffic. A good example would be like when your cruising next to a porsche and you might be at 35 mph, the porsche at the same speed to, your rpms are at 3500 to 4k+ and when your next to that porsche they sound like theyre at 5k+and over
but thats how they run they love it. dont get it twisted just because its a 4 cylinder its not ment to be underestimated-DONT BE AFRAID OF IT-__>IF THE SHE WANTS TO PLAY LET IT PLAY. vtec was no mistake its their for a reason.

Re: (M1-UNIT)
you all must be talking about single cam motors or something... ive been thru a b20vtec a b18c5 and now a b16a and on the freeway @ 80-85 my rpm's are up over 4k right around 4200-4300 for all. just depends i guess

If the car moves with ease, it's fine. You shouldn't rely on the stupid RPM, use the Force, Luke. Become -one- with your engine and you can tell when it is working too hard for the pull.

5th gear at 50 or 55mph is generally the most efficient way to travel
dont really matter what rpm ur at
i drive my car between 2500 and 3k rpm everyday on the highways.. its normal
2000rpm is speed limit usually

Re: good cruising rpm (Cypher0117)
I <3 taking my d16(y8) to the redline. It loves some rough play. and I still get about 300miles on a tank. WHich I believe is about par for Civics. I drive a lot of miles(put about 25k on the motor in the past year) , city and highway. Shes runnin strong.
But yeah, if she doesnt feel like your car is working hard, then it "aint no thang"

Re: good cruising rpm (OneCamIsEnough)
Hey its normal im running a 4.9 final drive with close ratio on gearings 3, 4 and 5(B16a) the Rpm when im at 100km is around 3700rpm...
everyday at least twice i would rev my engine up to 8000 plus.(thats the highest my cams can take me). so you;re alright dud. and besides its a honda its meant to be reved! if not in my humble opinion, not revving a honda is a SIN!
