getting civic hatch...is type r worth it?
Hey guys I am new to the civic world and the b series engines. Yes I did a search and didnt find waht I wanted. I am soon getting a 97 hatch and want to do a swap. But I want to go for the gold. Would a b18c5 be worth all the money or should I get a b18c1 and just mod it. If I went with the c1 I wouldnt have lsd. I just want to know what all you civic guys thought. Also how hard is it tpo get a c5 in a hatch. Is there any complications with stuff like axles breaking or anything like that. Your help and knowelage is greatly appreciated.

The installation of a b18c5 and b18c1 are pretty much identical, unless you plan to upgrade internals on the b18c1, I'd go with the c5 if you got the cash.

Well i have a GSR swap. Would I like a type R swap? Of course, but until the rest of my car is done I can't justify the cost. The engine is a small part of the whole picture.
Tom's hatch would still be pretty sweet if he had a GSR swap instead of the Type R. People probably wouldn't hang on his nuts though.

yeah i'd say the typeR motor is one super fun, unique, and powerful motor.
I can only speak from experience in an actual ITR... but I can imagine it being as fun if not moreso in a hatch.
i'm not really feelin the gsr motors though.
the LS are cool, inexpensive and lots of torque.
screw b16's
sohc dseries turbo setups are also very nice

Is a ITR motor worth it??
If you aren't planning big boost then yes it is (By big boost I mean lower compression, etc. COntrary to popular opinion ITR motors are very well setup for 10 psi and under boost applications on stock internals).

Depends what you want to do. The C5 is a much better street angine, it already has everything you'd want to replace on a c1. The c1 is better if you're gonig all out and just need a base to build off of, since you'd be replacing everything anyway, no need to spend the extra on parts you won't use. The ITR tranny is definitely a good idea tho.

wrong, c5 + turbo = boom.
if you're going to build the motor there is no point in getting a c5 over a c1, you're paying a premium for the 'R' as the motors are nearly identical.
save yourself 2k and get a c1.

Yuppers, I totally agree. Until someone finds out how to make the k20A swap sufficient & reliable. Than the k20a will be RULER of all.

both motors are great motors... If you plan on just doing the bolt on's and calling it good then the R will be the better way to go to get the most HP outta your setup, though if you're planning on boosting the car or swapping out internals, I'd say GSR just cause its a cheaper motor from the get go.... People buy the ITR's cause they already have the built up internals and you don't have to mess with them...just swap, and your done...
Also, if your only worry is having LSD, you can order from HMO (hmotorsonline.com) any motor with the LSD option for a additional $300.00. Tell him Eric (erics99si) sent ya, and he'll prolly give you a deal, I've baught 6 motors from Steve now... Great guy to work with!

I want the tpye r because I dont want to do internals. Just bolt ons hondata and maybe a 60 shot of NOS

then you're making a good decision IMO. i personally however don't have enough money to throw around and think a c1 is better bang for the buck than the c5.

the type R is a good motor if u dont want to **** with it. there was a quote a while ago from either the president of honda or a top R&D guy who was like "the type-r is a fully built race motor. Everything was designed and built perfectly, and is not designed to be modified." However...i'd check in the ITR forum to see how reliable they are with nitrous

the way that a C5 works with a hatch is speachless. Its not that fastest, but damn close to being the funest and most enjoyable car ive ever driven!
good luck with your project and drve safe!

jdm itr is soooooo worth it. My bf was debating between that and the jdm gsr for his eg and he's so happy he went with the type r. It was def worth every penny.

If you don't suffer from A.D.D and impacientness like I do, get the ITR, SCREW Nitrous. Slap on some bolt on's and you got an AWESOME daily right there. Me after thinking about it day and night and having to think day and night about it for another 3-4 months, ill be getting the GSR most probably because even with ITR id still get into head and block work. The famouse advice around here is "If your going all out, go with the Gsr, if not get the ITR."
