which gas to use on d16z6??
which gas is the requirement to use on a stock d16z6, 87,89, or 91. if it can run 87 with no issues or detoniation, i'll be glad to use it since it's $2.09 a gallon here.

Regular unleaded (87), even with low boost on a d you can use 87 w/o too much risk of detonation. With a stock z6 especially, you will not gain anything from using a higher octane, it will just waste your money and even lower your gas mileage even though by just an unnoticeable amount.

Re: FV-QR (o0Jash0o)
in my owners manual it says premium fuel with atleast a 91 octane rating for the D16z6 vtec motor for all other engine's in 92-95 civc's 87 is fine . so really the choice is up to u i ran 89 in mine all the time 89 is a happy medium between 87 and the 91 octane the owner manual says to use so man its up to u i just gave you the factory owners manual specs and what i ran so now u just have to make the choice

damn, the owners's manual says 91. i reallie like the price of 87 though. lolz. i guess i'll just use 91 at cheap gas stations and 87 at like chervon.

no it will not hurt your car, this is the reason why honda's have knock sensor. Once ping or detonation has taken place the ecu will richen the air/fuel ratio to rid of the detonation. Ending in bad gas mileage.
Vice Versa, if you run premium in a low compression motor you will not see any gains in performance or fuel economy. You will get worse mpg because you do not have enough compression to ignite all of the fuel inside the cylinder.

Re: (lilo_goki)
well then since u like ur Z6 use 91 unless u can get 93 at all pumps like i can here in maryland if so use 93 but at the very minimum i would use 89 on a D vtec but thats me . they dont reccomend in the owners manual to run premium fuel for there health lol there has to be a reason they reccomend you run 91,,,,,,,. here in maryland they only offer 87-89-and 93 no 91 except wawa is 92 octane so i run 93 in all my vtec engines because i like my engines lol

d series 87 is all u need realistically unless ur running turbo which im doing in that case u want to use 91 or higher and yes 91 will make u suffer on gas milage i took a 8 month test with that

im running my z6 here on 93 for 2mos. now..
eversince it was back on running condition..
i dont have any problems..
back in the phil. im also running
my EG there on 97.. i havent felt or
notice anythng wrong to the engine..
its just that the higher the octane im using
the easier it burns.. yeah youll suffer for the
mileage..

The reason for using higher octane is that you can use less fuel for a given amount of compression or advanced timing without the risk of detonation.
The reason more fuel is injected into the cylinder than is burned is because liquid fuel will cool the mixture.
Using 87 on a car that requires premium with an ECU that has adjustable fuel enrichment and timing advance/retard capability means than the injectors will spray more fuel and the distributor will use less timing advance. That being said...your wideband should have read richer with lower octane gas.
Were you making up that story?
I used 87 in my 99 GSR just to see what would happen. It pinged/knocked briefly if I jerked the throttle on a high load, low RPM situation. If I bogged it, it would knock for a second. I'm sure this was not good for the engine. The ECU retarded the timing..but only after it knocked.
So if you think about it, if you're running 87 in a car that requires 93, the knock sensor has to detect knock before it tells the ECU to push the timing back. Meaning that there was knock present. Knock is not good. The more often the engine knocks, the lower it's life expectancy.
It may not be by much or it may be a lot...but it does lower it.
I didn't even know the Z6 requied premium. I always just used 87 in mine. The Y8 has higher compression and it only requires regular. I guess the difference is that it has a knock sensor. If honda figured that the only reason not to use premium is because they installed a knock sensor...then it was probably fine to use 87 in the first place.
Just use 87 in your Z6.

Meaning that their 97 might be just like our 93.
Octane is a fuel's RESISTANCE to burning. If you use too high of an octane of gas for the engine, it may not burn all the way. This can cause the fuel to pool and damage the cat...or build up as carbon deposits in the exhaust. Since it won't get hot enough to burn it up, this can clog exhaust passages and actually hinder performance.
If your car requires 87 and you're using premium, it will only go faster because your wallet will be lighter.

now i'm determine to use 87 for the cheapness. i'm just too use to having my gsr in my civic, now i'm back with the z6 so 87 will be fine for me since it's compression is lower than the y8 and y8 require regular.

Whatever. 87 is fine either way.
