Default Front rotor clicking? 98 Ex sedan.

I bought the car in June with 42K miles on it, stock steelies/tires till yesterday. I went and visited a friend in NY who had some tires/wheels he was going to sell to me cheap. They were 17" TSW Revos. I got them put on the car, and took it about a 1/10 mile down the road and realized something wasnt right. We brought it back, jacked it up and spun the tires (should have done it before I drove) and realized they were mildly crooked. Pulled the tires and realized the spacers that came with the wheels wouldnt allow the tires to sit flushly with the rotors/drums. Pulled the spacers and everything seemed fine, I drove 150 miles home with them w/o a problem and drove to work with them today.

When I left work today I noticed a clicking from the right front rotor/brake. Up to about 30mph it clicks in tune with the speed. Slower I go, slower it clicks, faster I go, faster it clicks. Once I get above 30 it only does it periodically, maybe once every 2-3 seconds, or right after I hit a bump. Doesnt seem to affect how the car drives, brakes normally. I pulled the tires and put the stocks back on, still does it up to about 30mph, but after that doesnt do it nearly as often as with the 17's. There is a plate behind the roter itself that starts at the top about an inch from the rotor and goes down behind the rotor and at the bottom it seems like its almost touching, not sure if that would affect it or how putting the 17's on would ahve made it start clicking.

If you have any idea on what to look for, what I might have done, what I might try to fix it, etc, please let me know Sucks to do nothing but swap some tires and now all of a sudden my car does something it never did before.

So between the 1/10th mile of terribly crooked wheels and the 150 miles thereafter I could have fucked the cv boot/joint? Any way to confirm it or rule it out w/o getting into it too much? I'm "mechanically inclined", but by no means a mechanic, if forced to I'll figure it out, but I'd like to trouble shoot it as much as possible, I just need to know what to look for.

Worth the test fit/test drive/ruining my cv joint? Car is dark green, screaming for an 1.5" drop Have to wait for spring though. Edit, camera sucks, you get the idea though.

This happened on my car and it turned out that the asshat that turned my rotors didn't confirm how much rotor was left to turn and turned them too thin... Replaced both front rotors and low and behold the noise went away! Good luck, let us know what happens. I'll bet money that's what it is... That describes every symptom my car had to a T.

Nope, got plenty of rotor left, unless driving on the wheels crooked that short distance warped them. I occasionally get a noise too like calipers on rotor, like LONG after you wear your brake pads down, but it only happens periodically, and theres 1/4" of pad left at least, and probably 3/16" on both sides of the rotor left :\ So at this point I'm looking at maybe warped/thinned rotors, or dead cv joint.

It's hard to say that it's a cv joint or a brake problem. Do you have any problems when stopping, e.k. Does the brake pedal pulse when pressure applied? Does the clicking happen when you are turning or just in a straight line. Are the lug holes on the wheels starting to round out?

Very very rarely, like once a drive now the brake will go down feeling like the abs kicks on, that wierd bouncy feeling, and it makes a metal on metal scraping sound, like if you were to wear your brake pads down to the plates. But for the most part its just the clicking, and it does it intermittently now, but both during turning and straight driving. I drove home from work today and it didnt click once. But it did get the abs type feeling at my first braking out of the parking lot, which has happened to me before, so thats not TOO odd.

Besides me telling people what it is and isnt doing, is there anything I can visually check myself to confirm/rule out brake/cv problems?

put the car on the jack stand securely then by hand move the wheel left, right, up and down to check for loseness. if you do then you might have bad bearing or worn out suspension parts. or you can do this at your own risk!!! start the car and check for noises.

This is actually ironic because my road was just recently within the past 2 weeks tar'd and stoned, and they also layed fresh TRG in the parking lots at work last week. It didnt do it at all until I left work the next day after getting the wheels on. I'll have to take a look and see. Is the heatshield easily removable w/o taking the calipers/rotors off?
