first car
hi, i'm finally able to get my own car but can't decide what chassis civic to go with...
I've always wanted a 5th generation hatch as a first, but now that time has passed I find in my opinion 10+ year old to be a little too much. I really like the shape of the 5th gen hatchbacks compared to the 96-00's but I don't dispise the latter. If all prevails I would like to swap powerplants down the road as well.
I don't know if this is just a personal preference or can someone give me some direction what to go with.

88-91 is the worst as far as looks go, but everything else is golden. I don't like 96-00 at all, other than the front ends on 99-00. IMO, I'd get a 92-95. Very good cars.

Re: first car (JDM-EJ1)
the 92-95 has the most interchangeability options than any other generation civic.
By far the best choice on a leanring standpoint (OBD 1) and on a tunability standpoint. Also one of the best value per dollar cars out there.

Re: first car (DirtySol)
It all comes down to which one you think looks better and feel would be a better chassis for your goals. I own a 99 hatchback and have driven a buddies 92 hatchback several times. In my opinion I like the look and feel of the 6th gen better when sitting in the driver seat.
