Feed my Frankenstein SOHC-D
So I have a bit of a mini-me-monster going. Here is what I am doing so far:
D15b8 block, came with 4-2-1 headers and a short ram
D16Z6 Tranny
8lbs. flywheel
D15Z1 Head
Exhaust
Have yet to do: a SOHC crower cam or maybe even a stock z6 cam?
Hondata, uberdata or chrome
Y8 intake manifold
MAYBE LSD.

Not necessarily. Read this then say vtec-e is only good for saving gas. https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1414454
That build is going to put you at some pretty high compression, 12.5ish:1 by knology's calculator. Properly tuned and on 93octane that coule be quite a beast. If you want comparisons to n/a sohc builds, try here https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1524418 . The AllMotor forum can probably help with any specific questions you have.
Good luck!

I kinda got sidetracked when I hit "post" basically just looking for input and thoughts. Sadly I work among high-powered STis, and not that I think a single cam will ever have the power to outrun an STi, I do want some more low-end grunt to get out of the corners and around the cones a bit better. I want to embarrass some of my "check book racer" customers.
12.5-1 compression is alot... I am wondering if stock injectors/pump will be enough. I like the VTEC-E head becuase of the roller rockers. But I might need to add rods to this equation, or even lower compression pistons. Any thoughts?

Re: (lonefuzzy79)
you can run that high of compression.. but you are definately going to need injectors and fuel pump.. fpr and a bitchen tune.. i dont think you are going to be able to run that on 91/93 pump gas tho.. i might be wrong

z1 head makes very little power, and even on high compression, won't make that much more. Also, the intake ports on it are extremely small, I was gonna sell someone a b7 manifold for their z1 and then they looked at their intake ports and said no way because they're just so small. Not to mention you can't tune it that well to do anything if you're using the stock ecu, and then if you use something else you're getting into trouble with spending lots tuning the ecu to run lean-burn or your just not getting the gas mileage out of the engine.
To the guy who is claiming the z1 can be used for power, I'd say no. Bense may have made a fun set up with his y5, but it's built very differently and with much greater capability in the power arena.
EDIT: Not trying to hate on the project, love the z1 to death.

Re: (SVOboy)
I wasnt claiming it would make big power, just more than stock. Mostly I was trying to show the kid badmouting vtec-e the error of his ways
In hindsight I realize I may have worded my previous post poorly and led on more than the build is capable of, but I still wouldnt be surprised with some work aka port job if it could make 130ish to the wheels with work and a tune

Gonna stay NA I guess. Wicked fuel economy is my goal, so yeah,
I've heard theories about turbos and gas mileage, so that might happen, but not for a while.

Will a Z6 cam work in a Z1? My reading seems to indicate that the Z1 head is similar to the y8 but has roller rockers. It's a 16V right? If cam profile is the only difference I am going to try it. And what nets the higher compression, squelch area?

I am wondering then how the VX and HX differ. It seems that the HX and Y8 are radically different in how the VTEC functions, Is the VX similar? Spade seems to think that the difference in power from y8 to HX is in breathing and tuning and with the right bits the HX will be able to spin up faster with more power... thoughts?

The z1 and y5 are just totally different heaad structures, while the y5 and y8 are the same exact head if you take all the crap out of it, that's about what I know in that arena.
