failing emissions in Northern Va..
Well this is the SECOND time i've failed VA emissions! I took it in and I even used the GTP (guarenteed to pass) fluid before i took the test and still failed! I also went for a long drive on the freeway to get my cat REAL hot and still failed! Don't know what else to try other than the following
-retard timing to 10 degrees
-change pcv valve
-change spark plug
-change cap and rotor
is there anything else you guys can think of? I have 85k miles on a d16 sohc vtec motor with just IHE...
i passed everything at 15mph but at 25mph i failed for too much hydrocarbons! failed by a lot actually..
any help would be appreciated !

IHE-- i have akimoto intake, dc sport 421 cermanic header, and 5 zigen fireball catbak and thats it... any ideas? thanks

man...not too many mods....do you have alot of miles on the car? any blue smoke coming out, or other probs you might have noticed?? help me help you...need a lil more info.

nah no blue smoke.. only 85k miles.. no other noticable probs. car still runs great! what else ya need?

try this...pcv valve, plugs, airfilter cleaning/or replacement, fuel filter, and run some of that injector cleaner through it.

sounds cool.. what about retarding the timing and changing cap and rotor? i've already tried that injector cleaner didn't do anything..

yep.. same problem here. i have the same exact mods on my civic and i have problems with carbon fumes etc.. my motor has 80k on it too.. who knows.

A high HC number typically means unburnt fuel is being passed out through the exhaust.
Well looky here...you got your timing retarded 10 dgrs....I think you know what you need to do here.
And a general tune-up should be done as well: PCV valve, adjusting the valves, fuel filter, air filter, cap, rotor, plugs & wires. I see you did some...have you done any of these others...especially the valves?

Yeah I have a 96 honda civic ex..
I dont understand that part about retarding the timing.. I thought you are supposed to retard timing if you are running rich and advance if you are running lean? Hydrocarbons i would think would be result of running rich correct?
I am planning on pcv valve, cap and rotor, spark plugs, and maybe wires? how do i replace the fuel filter? never done that before.. thanks

C'mon man...did you even read the first line of my response? I plainly state that high HC #'s are typically due to unburnt gas going out the exhaust....does that signify to you something other than RICH?
When your car was stock...where was the timing? And when your car was stock, do you think it was running rich? It sounds like your ride was running rich and you tried to correct the problem by retarding the ignition....is this accurate?
Either way, you need to get things back to a stock setting...plain and simple.
Replacing the fuel filter is EASY. Just buy a replacement fuel filter (it comes with the two crush washers that you need to replace when re-installing). When I replaced mine, I used two wrenches...one to hold the filter, the other to break the banjo bolt loose. On my 99 CX, I had to remove the fuel filter 'holder' to actually remove the fuel filter itself. Assuming its the same...if you just take a look at it, you'll see a 'strap' going across it holding it in place.
When your car was stock...where was the timing? And when your car was stock, do you think it was running rich? It sounds like your ride was running rich and you tried to correct the problem by retarding the ignition....is this accurate?

Ok so far I guess i should do this then...
Retard timing
change pcv valve
change cap rotor spark plugs.. wires too maybe?
change oil
Drive for about 20 mins at high speed before the test.
change fuel filter...
anything else i can do to run it leaner?

Being totally serious here. Depending on your age call up the DMV and tell them you're going to school at JMU (Harrisongburg, VA 22807). They really don't ask any questions (I had to do it for my Accord). Make the 1-1.5 hour drive down here and pass inspection without emissions (too many old trucks here could never pass).

Honda recommends changing the Oxygen sensor every 60,000 miles....have you changed it yet? If you still have the original one then that is probably the problem. Does it run rough when it is cold? Does it idle funny? Are you getting not so good gas mileage? These are all signs of a bad O2 sensor.

call honda theres a recall on that car 96 and 97 my friend had a 97 it wont pass take it to honda and they will take care of it
but thats in ca
if not try and clean out the intake manifold and wash it in a parts wash
and all new gaskets i did that to my jdm b16 and it passed barely

call honda theres a recall on that car 96 and 97 my friend had a 97 it wont pass take it to honda and they will take care of it
but thats in ca

Honda doesn't have a recommended replacment interval for the O2 sensor... I don't know where that guy read that.. lol... As long as all the emissions equipment is still in place, you can just take it back to a local dealer (Fairfax Honda), and let them figure it out... The Federal government levied a decision against Honda about their OBD2 systems, stating that they don't make the car run clean enough... Because of that, they have to repair any faulty emissions equipment on 96-up cars... How do I know this? I've had to look at a couple dozen acuras for that problem over the past year.....
