Default Failed the CA state referee today for my BAR sticker

UPDATE: 7/12/04 - PASSED BAR!!!

Failed for two reasons at Skyline College:

1. SRS light on (I knew this would be a problem but tried anyways)
2. AEM Air intake. The problem here was that the air intake had a CARB approval number from 1998 and my motor is a 2000 motor. The intake needs to be CARB approved for 2000. I will resolve this by slapping an OEM intake on for the test.

ALMOST THERE!

Oh yea, I have the following:

1999 EK w/ 2000 USDM B18c5 motor and a 1998 ITR ECU.

Stay tuned...hope to have this done by Friday.

I thought about pulling the SRS light but decided not too...I had no idea the intake was from 1998 since it came on the car when I bought it.

No big deal, just wanted to share my ref experience.

I wouldn't say they are super strict at all...two very nice guys that very well understand honda's. In fact, after they failed me we were talkin for a few minutes and the guy was like, "those motor mounts are AWESOME...this is the setup everyone wants" bla bla bla...he knew exactly what he was looking at so that's a good thing I think.

place I went too barely knew their stuff... which wasn't really an advantage at all since all of my stufff was hooked up correctly and everything was in working order.

good luck next time BTW>

heh, I have ZERO paperwork on the car. I didn't even get registration for the car from the seller. So yea...didn't really require anything.

Dont worry about it man, it took me like 6 tries, but I finally got my sticker. Now its time to get that block built up lol (visually I will be carb legal, but on the inside it will be a different story, I'll still pass the sniffer though).

I had sooooo many problems it was amazing, even more amazing is the fact that the dumb ref guy didnt know where to plug in something to check whatever he had to check (he didnt know where the wires are under the dash on the right side of the car, to check engine codes, what a tard). Then there were more problems, but in the end you will pass, dont worry about it too much, its soooooo worth it in the end.

I cant wait until I get pulled over, pop the hood, let the cop think its all illegal, then show him my sticker and ask him "how many of these do you see" because I know theres not many runnin legit out in cali.

some refs will ask for a paper work for the ECU, BTW you can go to the dealer and get a quote for a 00 type r ecu and use that quote at the ref station. good luck.

I've only been once at a ref station, past the first time

same here the ref i went to did not even ask for any paperwork or even looked at the ECU of the car. but nothing beats being ready with all the paperwork in hand just in case.

when I went to the ref, everthing in my hatch was converted to GSR spec, minus the header and catatlytic converter. I had the bill of sale, misc paper printed from H-T, price quote from the dealer for a p72 95 gsr ECU.

I thought you had to have a stock airbox. I was told an intake even with a CARB will fail the visual.

the carb # has to be correct for the engine and model year of the engine. i have an aem for a 94-97 del sol vtec for my 94 JDM b16a, so it's AOK!

Yes, you will have to smog your JDM motor to get it BAR legal.

Also, you will be missing emissions sensors that your ECU will not produce when they scan your system...so that will be a failure right there.

JDM motors are tough to get up to spec but it can be done. Certainly not impossible.

Would this include a greddy turbo?

if the greddy turbo has a carb # on it, make sure it's CARB approved for the same year or AFTER the year of your motor.

I heard that people have problems because they have to add an oil line. I can't get a straight answer on this. Some people say yes because of the CARB #. Other people say no because of the oil line and the turbo manifold. Has anyone been BARed while having a turbo installed? Does anyone know?
