Default FAILED BAR Smog, Help me Diagnose the problem, 92 EG with 2001GSR

well originally i went into the state ref to get my exhaust BARD but then i forgot they pop the motor to check fluids, so now it changed from exhaust noise to motor swap, and he can't do the sound check until the motor is BARD, so he told me he can smog it right now and to see if it passes then he can do the sound check, but until then he can't do it, so i thought i would give it a shot, and failed. Failed HC and NOX, but its not that bad and i want to see if u guys can help me pin point the problem. i was talking to the tech students and they said it wasnt really that bad and said it was prolly the cat, cause its old,Here is wat i have..

2001 GSR motor (he ran it as a 94 Motor have no IDEA why)

Using the OBD1 ECU (no Check lights)

it has a skunk 2 intake manifold

CTR cams - (from wat the last owner said, so not really sure)

he did a visual and its missing the EVAP Canister and Purge Solenoid

and has the original 92 civic Cat on there

Number -

might want to listen to the tech and change the cat or o2 sensor. I had my gsr bar'd in my eg and the first time i failed. My numbers were wayyy higher than yours so i changed the cat, o2 went back and pass with no problems at all. My numbers dropped so low the second time after changing the cat and o2, good luck

He ran it as a '94 because you have an OBD1 ecu

With the new cat you should pass...

no wat? i heard if your running high NOX its the cat, running rich??? well thats wat i have been hearing or reading, yea timing is good, so said the ref, i thought the timing would be like advanced like 18 and ****, but seeing that it read 16 seems ok.

set your timing to 14*BTDC. This will help some, along with the new cat.

couldn't find the chart but here is some info. NOx is caused by lean condition, engine overheating, egr malfunction (gsr doesn't have....i think), carbon deposits in combustion chamber, timing advanced to far, timing not advancing, defective cat
i was wrong on the rich part, nox drops off when it's rich (co's and hc's go up)

engine doesnt over heat at all, yea gsr doesnt have EGR valves, maybe carbon deposits (ill get some GUM OUT or something), i got a new CAT, and the timing was inbetween 14-16, i thought Retarded timing would cause to lean out since the motor isn't putting out more fuel??

CO, numbers

15 MPH

MAX - 0.76

AVE - 0.10

MEAS - 0.38

25 MPH

15MPH

MAX - 121

AVE - 31

MEAS - 123 ( just one over)

25MPH

MAX - 96

hopefully everything will be ok when i go back, i got a brand new cat, and i have my evap purge on the way, so visual should be good and with the new cat, it should be good also, i'm also going to get that guarenteed to pass **** that they sell at auto zone and retard the timing a bit so it doesn't burn at high tempatures, and run/rev the car so that cat can get nice and hot, as mentioned above, cause i know when he does the visual again, hes going to turn the car off, any other tips?

i cant believe they still passed you on the visual with the skunk 2 manifold. i just got a LS reffed into a 95 coupe. a new cat would help a lot. i dont know about the magnaflow high flow tho. i would get a three way cat it cleans up emissions real well. retard the timing to 14 degrees and get the evap solenoid and canister on. you should pass with flying colors

well i thought the same exact thing about the magnaflow, cause i asked the muffler guy if they sold high flow cats, and he said yeah, wat we put on is a high flow....and i was like uumm, isn't that not going to make me pass smog or give me more smog problems, he said no there all approved by some ****, said it works the same way and your OEM cat, and that the whole high flow thing that other ppl tell you is just like a gimick type of thing, high flow this and high flow that, told me that it will work the same way as my OEM, so i went on the site and checked it out, guess wat he was saying was true, he said same goes with like catco, carsound, and the rest. So pray for me guys that i pass,

good luck. Your lucky he passed you with the visual cuz the REF i went to required me to use the same year ecu as my 00' gsr. Only problem was the 00' gsr had a immobilizer so car wouldn't start. Luckily he let me use a 99 ecu.

Good luck. Hope you join the club

ANYONE KNOW:

If I roll to the ref and try to get a GSR motor BAR'd with the ref FAILING me for visual or whatever reason, will they put something in the computer that my car is "illegal" or some **** until I come back and pass?
