So I have a 92 vx that is pretty much 100% stock and I was replacing the clutch when doing a maintenance overhaul from when I purchased the vehicle. I replaced the clutch/pp, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, and flywheel. The previous clutch had a very similar feel when taking out of first from a stop.

It seems very on/off (not a long engagement time at all). In fact, if I let the clutch out engage too quickly when going from 1st to 2nd you can definitely feel/hear the gears engage (much too quickly when trying to go for smooth).

Are there any adjustments for the master/slave cylinder that would have anyyyything to do with this type of behavior, given it seems very similar between old and new clutch?

I was expecting to be smooth sailing. I am pretty good at driving it now, but it is a lot of effort to get even a semi smooth launch from a stop and also a mental note when going into 2nd too.


Any help/opinions/advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

I would be interested in information on this as well. Bought a 99 EX about 2 months ago. The car has a good amount of chatter and it's a pain to drive when the AC is on. Also, I have troubles getting the car into second gear occasionally. I'm guessing this will not be resolved by replacing the clutch, but I can deal with that.

I'm replacing the flywheel as well because I'm not sure of the shape that mine is in, and it's a DD so I can't wait for the current one to be machined. A friend of mine is putting the clutch in this weekend, and I want to make sure I can get the car driving better with the couple hundred bucks I'm tossing at the clutch/labor.

Car details:
y7 block / y8 head (bought it like that)
short ram air filter
Shifter seems to have shorter throw than stock, haven't gotten a chance to look at it
165k on Odometer, not sure about mileage on engine or trans


I know someone's going to tell me to start a new thread, but it's a similar enough problem and live4soccer7 has already replaced what I plan on replacing and I'm hoping to avoid the problems.

Not a problem, I'm glad to share my thread. Mine might be worse with AC, but I can't test it because I don't have AC ha ha ha.

I thought for sure this would have fixed my issue. I had no quarrels with replacing the parts, but was left a little disappointed.

When was the last time you changed transmission fluid? or even checked fluid levels?

You need to adjust clutch pedal engagement height. It's fairly easy to do and requires 12 and 14 mm combination wrenches

Quick question, could old fluid in the clutch master/slave be a cause? I was going to replace them and the brake fluid, however I could not get a good fit on the bleeders with a wrench. It seemed to be a very strange size and didn't want to round them.


Edit: The engagement seems to all happen in the top 20-30 percent of the clutch depression.

Yes you can bleed the clutch. The slave cylinder bleeder nipple is 8mm, if not 8mm then 10mm. Don't allow air to enter the clutch master cylinder as you bleed the system. Add new fluid as the old fluid is expelled from the system, but get all that old crap out of there. You'll know you are done when the hydraulic fluid is the same color going in as it is coming out.
