Default Engine revs with transmission in gear but car only moves slowly

So I am about to purchase this 97' 4 door with a d16y7 and manual transmission.. starts great.. however when you try and put it in gear, it feels like it "kind of" goes into gear and the car moves forward but when you press on the gas it goes but very slowly and does not accelerate really at all.. just a tad... Bad transmission? orrr??? Appreciate any help in advance

It could be any number of things, and you haven't given us enough details to help you. Any CEL? Does the bulb even work?

If you haven't actually bought this car yet, just don't. Walk away, and find another. There's no reason to buy someone else's problems.

Sounds like the clutch may be slipping.

I'm picking it up for $300. It does have a CEL on so I am going back today to pay fOr it and get the title and then check what the code is that the CEL is throwing.

I have intentions of replacing the whole engine and tranny, but if it might jut be a clutch or other smaller issue then I can save some money.

Just looking for possible problems that it may be

Hell, if you had mentioned that whole $300 thing, I would have said to hell with it. If the shell and frame are in decent condition and straight, **** whatever engine or transmission issues you might have, pick it up. I take back what I previously said.

It does sound similar to a slipping clutch, though. Note I said similar, not the same. Does the engine sound like it's revving without the car moving at the speed it should be? That would solidify a slippage diagnosis. Are there any abnormal noises?

OP, do you know why the car is selling for $300? There might be more problems about this car that you don't know about.

Yes, the car revs up but the car does not move like it should..

There are other issues with the car..

Needs an axel back exhaust,
Needs the interior cleaned and some parts redone,
Needs a new rad support (dude ran into a curb),
Needs a new power steering line,
Quarter panels are rusted,
And a few other things.

The good things are the engine starts right up, doesnt smoke, no noticeable leaks.
It has brand new tires on all four wheels
A/c works and all electronics work
Sunroof doesn't leak and work perfect

So for $300 bucks I can't pass it up.. Especially I can take it to the salvage yard down the road and get $400 for it with a title and make $100 haha even though I won't

Put the car in 1st, engage the e-brake. Slowly let out the clutch, if the car continues to run the clutch is slipping. If it stalls when the clutch is released your clutch should be able to at least drive around town.

Clean your throttle body and idle air control.

It needs to be done about every 40k mile or sooner, and I bet your car has NEVER had the throttle body & idle air control cleaned out.
