\\\\\ ECU's Exchanging? Cop trouble please help! /////
PLEASE TAKE SOME TIME TO READ AND HELP ME OUT!!!
Ok, so i had some trouble with the Cops!
Cops think i stole a p2p ecu out of a civic. I say, there is no way i did!
They impounded my civic and found 2 p2p ECU's in my car... He asked why i would have the same ECU's in my car as the one stolen??? I said, i have the same model car thats why!!!
I want to prove that these are very common among Honda owners, and traded out often for swaps or for whatever.
Please take some time to help me out!
Post how many ECU's you've traded/bought/sold and for what price. Also if you have ever recieved or wrote a bill of sale for that item.
Any info/ comments are greatly appreciated!
All posts are going to be shown to my Lawyer and Procecuter!
So, please positive feedback only?

Don't they have to prove you are in possesion of stolen goods? If they only 'think' you are, then they should not charge you until it's been proven to them or they can provide evidence which supports their idea that your ecus are stolen. Also, the fact that you have more than one of the same ecu is irrelevant to the original charge of you possesing a stolen ecu; they'd first have to show that the first ecu is stolen to have resonable suspicion that the others are as well.

Aha, talk about unreasonable search and seizure .
Oh well, goes to show you how your constitutional rights (such as that one) mean less and less with the invocation of new surveillance and security acts.

How is that unreasonable search and seizure? They impounded his car.
Sounds like there is more to the story than just a questionable ECU.

At OP: whether a certain part is common or scarce among honda owners or any other group has no bearing whatsoever on whether or not YOU stole THOSE PARTICULAR parts. I have trouble believing that this thread is going to be of any use to you at all.
I will say, however, that it would take more than what you've told us to prove that the parts were stolen. Are you being charged with a crime or are the cops simply asking you a question?
It's easy to sit here and cop-bash but the fact is, there are a lot of people on this site who have had their cars stolen and would be thrilled to get a cop to investigate their vehicle theft as thoroughly as these cops are...
Once again, sounds like we don't have the whole story here. Why is your car in impound to begin with?

Re: (dr92cx)
Agreed, I deffinitely think there's more to the story, I mean there are identifying marks on all parts of a car for the most part that can link it to a stolen vehicle or to a vechile it was stolen from. Cops for the most part do not just "accuse" without something to back it up, it's generally only in the movies they do that kinda ****. They must have discovered something or have you suspected for something, for that matter unless they're big car enthusiasts they probably wouldn't know wtf the ECU is or care what it is unless it was reported by someone, I'm in for more details or count my vote towards you did something wrong.

Re: (sicones)
If the cop thinks that the OP's ecus are stolen then the cop should go on ebay and charge everyone selling a ecu with possesion of stolen property!!

Yup.. better get yourself a lawyer and have prrof of where you got the ecu - shop/honda-tech/craigslist, etc. Username, name, and address on where it came from would be ideal.
ECU trading and multiple ECU ownership is very common because they are so readily available.
I have:
1 USDM P72 I use for smog.
1 JDM P30 for daily driving.
1 Chipped P28 for "Spirited" driving.
1 Chipped P08 sor the same thing, just a different program.
1 Spare P28 for future use.
1 JDM P733 I got out of a clip my friend bought.
3 or 4 OBD0 ECU's Ive gotten when I did swaps at my house in the past few years.
So all in all, ive got 8 or 9 in my posesion.
Good luck in court.

I'm pretty sure its impossible to prosecute you, unless they registered that piece of harware with its unique serial number before they found it on you. As for impounding the car, thats rediculous.

as far as having more than one ECU in the car... I used to run with a spare in my car when I first started working on ECUs. Just as a "I'm not getting stranded if something freaky happens" type thing.
As far as owning ECUs... we all know more than one is never a bad thing.
NOTE: this pic is not mine, but I'd guess I'm about 1/3 of the way there.
