ECU problem.. please help !!
Hey guys... My 98 honda civic was running kinda rough, so i just brought it into the dealership yesterday. I forget the exact terminology, but basically they said my ECU was fried and i need a new one. they want $1000 to get a new one and install it. This is pretty freaking expensive, is this too expensive? what should i do? thanks for all your help

this is way too expensive...an ecu is plug and play. Search in the classified forum and look for a used P2P that is the ecu you need. (assuming you have a stock setup)

Ya man no way should you ever spend 1g on an ecu... Go hunt the classified section and look for the ecu you need.
Install is just plug and play, meaning you unclip the wires out of your old ecu and just plug them right up to your new ecu.

its a stick. boy.. thsi is such a releif to hear that i can get one for like under 200. Do ECU's ussually go out? should i be concerned with getting a used one? i just need the basic stock ecu.. the exact model thats in my civic.

no concerns...ecu's are normally reliable unless they are treated incorrectly. Just search around in the classifieds for a P2P, and when you get it take out your old ecu and plug in the new one...easy as that. let me know if you need help on identifiying the placement of the ecu.

Re: ECU problem.. please help !! (Built2Spill)
Heres waht i dont get. The CEL came on and it was running pretty rough, so i took it to autozone and got their free diagnostic check. and there machine said i needed a new "Air Charge Sensor".. so then i take it to the stealership.. and they say i need a new ECU? they didnt mention anything about the air sensor.. should i check out the air sensor first.. or do you think this is an ECU problem. is and air sensor hard to install? this sucks... i thought my honda would never have any probs.. its only got 80k on it.. oh well.. let me know your thoughts

Re: ECU problem.. please help !! (Admiral Assjack)
i think you might be talking about the mass airflow sensor on the intake....if you are throwing a code then your ecu shouldnt be the problem. I would recommend now that you purchase a new mass airflow sensor and install that...it too is easy to install it is located by the throttle body. then if your car is still not running properly, which it should be then i would recommend an ecu.

hmmm...learn how to check your ecu codes. Just do a search...theres a ton of posts on it. When you check it if you just get a flat code where the light just stays on and doesn't blink you a code then that means your ecu is messed up. Otherwise it may be something else.

look on the passanger side on the right hand side kick panel for a connector (2 wire - blue in colour) behind plastic cover which needs to be removed exposing the ecu. find it, short out the connector using a paper clip/wire and turn the key over to on position and count the number of blinks. long blink = 10, short = 1.
