Re: dumb question (Frickr)
The fuel light isn't going to come on from having a tank that's 1/4 full.
The fuel light won't come on until you're starting to pass the "E." If you want to test it it's real simple, pull out the backseat, remove the pod WITHOUT the fuel lines going to it, it's like 6 nuts (this is your fuel sending unit). Gravity will pull the float down, so start the car, and see what the fuel gage reads.
If you're positive it's not working, see what changing the bulb does, if you haven't tried it yet.

yea 1/4 is no good man, you might be use to driving other cars where in 1/4 the light will go on, but that is a no go on a honda you really got to drive that thing below e to get it on, my friend gs 430's gas light comes on at 1.4 because he has a 20 gallon tank i think, yea so try driving it a little more and see if it comes on,

Re: (ifIexplode)
there are 12 gallons in a 96-00. i have the same problem and it kinda sucks i know, i have tried to fix it but i dont have the tools to pull and check/change the bulb (i'm in college) so i have jus gotten used to running it to about the E then filling up.

Well, technically it's 11.9 gallons. So the OP says that he's getting down as low as only .2 gallons in the tank. That means just under a quart of gas left and his light still isn't coming on.
Sounds like it could be the sensor in the tank or the bulb.

Re: (NOFX)
just keep your gas tank full and you wont have to worrie about the stupid light.gas seems to last longer when your full anyways cause there is no room in the tank for evap.i fill up when im down to 1/2 tank and i swear i get more miles out of my gas...could be an optical illusion though

Re: (NOFX)
well i usually keep it full, just on long trips, when i get home, i dont always get down to the station right away. the only place that sells 91 here is crappy gas. octane boosters and 89 worth it?

The car has a knock sensor. '89 is not going to hurt it, just make it run a bit sluggish.
You shouldn't drain the tank down that far anyway. It allows condensation to form easier, draws sediment into the fuel system more easily, and makes the fuel pump run hotter - and increases the likelyhood that you'll run out of fuel and/or starve for fuel during periods of high lateral or longitudinal G-forces. I also have an unproven theory that it is bad for the injectors and the evaporative emission control system.
There are many good reasons not to run your tank low on fuel, but no good reasons to do so.

It's actually more illusion than reality. It's due to the way the fuel level float works. The needle doesn't move at all while the tank is close to full (first quarter of the gauge range), because the float is pinned to the ceiling of the tank by the fuel. It takes time for the fuel level to drop the distance of the height dimension of the float itself. To put it another way, the float cannot move while it is totally or partially submerged; the level of fuel has to fall past the float and drop below the bottom of the float before the float arm moves.
It's a tough concept to describe without a visual aid.

No.

10% ethanol fuels will always get worse milage than 100% gasoline; not much you can do there.
You do realize that most stations make 89 at the pump by combining fuels from the 87 and 91 tanks, right?
No.

Well, it is North Dakota . . .
Move to somewhere that has a population if it bothers you enough

lol
I moved from the east coast to the west coast. I miss the east so much. Cheaper to live, near the beach (fresh seafood ftw) and lower crime too. I have learnt that I'd rather not live in an area with a lot of other Honda enthusiasts. Kind of sad.
