Dsm guy needs help with non-running EG hatch.
I got a free EG hatch last week. The engine turns over but does not start. I know it does not get any spark, so I'm looking at that today. I was wondering what problems these motors usually have? For instance, does the ecu go bad like in a dsm? I have also heard of the main relay going bad under the dash so I will look at that too. The owner of this car did not take care of the car very much; so far I have found a torn spark plug wire, badly eroded dis. cap, and bad plugs. Please post any relevant information, and thanks for the space.

Wells..it depends on the trim model of your hatch. CX models have a dinky 70hp motor while Si's have 125hp (D16z6). And no...Honda ECUs are way better than DSM's. They don't usually go bad unless you shorten them out.

Sorry, forgot to put it's the dinky cx model. It does have nice black leather though.

Re: (93turbo16)
No check engine lights. I had a friend crank over the car and I can't hear the fuel pump. When I pull the ecu fuse in the engine bay I can hear stuff buzzing/flowing like fuel. So I don't know. I'm going to pull the fuel return line to see if the pump is working.

Ive seen plugs/wires/caps etc. go so bad on some cars that the motors were running on like 2 cylinders. Replace all this little stuff before you start spending any real $.

Ok I pulled the return line, no fuel. Still no spark. I pulled out the main relay and it has brown **** all over the solder to pcb. My friend has a teg with a similar motor over here, I'm going to see if I can try his relay. If not I will try reslodering the main relay; no worries because I have soldered on dsm stuff plenty of times.

No point in throwing parts at something...they stick but hardly ever cure the problem. Crack the top of your fuel filer and see if there is pressure, if not trouble shoot. Hook up a timing light to all 4 pulg wires and see if you have spark to all four. Work smarter, not harder

No since throwing money at a free car. I'm pretty sure it's the main relay, I just noticed it had the dry solder circular cracks in two of the pins. Hopefully it will start after I resolder the relay. Thanks for the help.

Re: (Ryan483)
yes fix that. Mine had a harline crack around the pump side power and electricy doesnt like cracks when it gets hot outside. ALWAYS more heat= more resistance. Fix that and let us know what happens

Re: Dsm guy needs help with non-running EG hatch. (PhatAcuraIntegra)
The one run of Honda's that we did see smoked ECU's on was the 92-95 civics. However, that is most likely not it. I would check the ignitor and coil. Often times the added tax that a worn out secondary ignition system puts on a coil will cause it to give up the ghost. Pull the coil, pop the brass colored cover on it (pops off with a pocket screw driver) and if you see blued hot spots you have your culprit...as a quick check. do the ignitor while in there if so, it will most likely fail as well soon after. cap, plugs, wires cap and rotor aren't throwing parts at the car as some have suggested. If you have found the parts are already shot you'll need them anyway.

spark problems
first check the coil hondas are know for coils going out then the igniter in the distribuator if those dont fix it get go for a hole new distribuator
