Drivin' in the snow with aftermarket wheels??
Yo.
Does anyone here drive in the winters (snow) with their performance tires/wheels still on?
I have 14" alloys with 195/60/14 yokohama ES100s..
-will that be a pain in the *** to drive with..
or
-will that be bad for my wheels/tires..as in salt and stuff?
thanx.

I'm driving with my 15" Integra Wheels and AVSES100 in the front and Kumho 711 in the back. I don't do snow driving anyway...and AVS are a great rain tire...so I figure they arent a problem as long as the roads are plowed. Have had good luck with them so far <knocks on wood>

Dunno about the ES100s, but the Azenis are complete hell to drive with in the snow. Forget about it. I promise you'll end up either sliding around or in a ditch.

Tirerack offers a package of 15" blizzacks with some mille miglia's and a couple other rims starting at 700. If thats not ur choice just go pick up some blizzacks you will never regret it.

heheh... i took my azenis out in the snow again today. i got around ok actually. it wasn't really snow - more like that slush crap just chillin on the road. i'll be gettin some winter tires this week, so i won't have to do that anymore. i probably wore em out a little bit from spinning them so much, but once i got movin i was cool. you just have to go slow and use the gas only when necessary.

I do alot of highway driving to work and didn't trust my azenis so on came the steelies! Good thing when I traded for my hatch, the guy had put brand new all seasons on the steelies. Winter time+e-brake=rally time! Woohoo. Aphex23, what part of NW Wi are you?

Re: Drivin' in the snow with aftermarket wheels?? (Heinz57)
Hell no. I always have the right tire for every situation
I use the stock 15" Si wheels with Kumho 711s in the summer, but in the winter I use 14" steelies from an EX with dedicated snow tires.
I've never had a problem getting around in the snow with snow tires. I pass up SUVs and trucks all the time that get stuck or drive into ditches. It's amusing to see the idiots that think just because they have a 5500lb 4x4 SUV with ABS and all-season tires, it means they can go 80mph through the snow. They learn soon enough, when they're stuck in a ditch and getting passed by my 2600lb 2WD sport coupe with no ABS. The key to winter driving is to keep up your momentum, stay in a higher gear (to put less torque to the ground), smooth out your inputs, and use less braking force but distribute it over a longer distance. Don't brake hard or else you'll just lock up, and don't ever brake while either oversteering or understeering.
Performance tires, on the other hand . . . well let's just say that Azenis won't even move your car in snow, let alone stop the car once it gets going.
Spending $100 for a used set of steelies with decent snow tires is better than spending $4,000 to replace body panels and suspension components when you slide into something on your summer tires.

you live in snow, store your car! unless you don't care about it! you can find a decent beater for the same price as a set of snow tires

I do, when I bought my car, it already had rims and itty bitty *** tires on it. I get minimal traction on ice and snow. Still very driveable. I just car a shovel in ym trunk just in case. I only drive it to work and home. IF I go out in town or whatever, I take the SUV unless the roads are pretty clear, then I will take the civic

That car is also a RWD supra that puts a lot more power to the ground than most of our civics.

Re: (BauleyCivic)
I have es100's on my rotas and they don't go anywhere. I have to wait until the roads are melted. I need to put my steelies on. It sucks. I can't even move my car in the driveway.

With winter time u deff need to swap the wheel. but i dont think snow and salt are your biggest problems. At least around where i live, pot holes come out everywhere. The snow is your least problem. ******* potholes can crack your rims. IT really sucks cause i try to avoid them and ive gotten pretty good at knowing where there at, but sometimes you just get stuck and theres no avoiding it.
Not to jack your thread, but what can salt do to the rims??? Corrode (sp) them???
