Downforce?

Downforce?
what exactly is downforce? my friend talks about it all the time. he says that the mower power his car has the more downforce is needed. he says things like good bumbers and spoilers work good for that.

Re: Downforce? (excivicboy96)
WTF?? you down really need a spoiler for downforce on a honda. You basically dont want grip of air going under your car so a drop helps. but a rear spoiler is basically for looks and most look like crap. Spoon is the ONLY one I would put.

It sorta has to do wif aerodynamics. In professional races, you see wings and such added to aid car. The faster they go, the more downforce they have because of the wings being pushed down against the wind. This allows more traction and prevents the car to lift off the ground. Hope you get what I'm sayin.

Re: Downforce? (Smash03)
I would never tell you something in here that I wouldn't tell you to your face. An e-thug I am not.
Your friend is an idiot.
But to answer your question:
"The term downforce describes the downward pressure created by the aerodynamic characteristics of a car that allow it to travel faster through a corner by holding the car to the track or road surface."
Unless you're on the track you don't need a spoiler. If you're going that fast on the street where you need one....
You're an idiot, and you deserve whatever happens to you for going that fast on the street, you put yourself at risk, you put me at risk and worse of all, you put my kids, whom I would kill for, at risk.
But I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt since you are stating that your friend is saying this and not you.

Go ask your friend what speed he thinks he needs to get to before a spoiler starts to provide usable downforce, then come back and tell us so we can all have a good laugh.

You try dropping one off a vertical cliff? Might hit 85 if your cliff is high enough. Out of an airplane should do the trick for sure
And the speed at which a car needs to be to receive downforce is well over 100. I would give a rough estimate, but I forgot the precise number it's supposed to be.
Oh, and spoilers only give USEFUL downforce to a MR/ rear wheel. Front wheel can't use spoiler downforce.

that all depends on how aerodynamic the car is, and the design of the spoiler.
That kid in the geo may have felt his spoiler at 85 (if it was the big *** parkbench style), but it was probably just the added wind resistance slowing him down, not downforce.

okay to clean up my post, apparently you need diffusers (the wings people put on the side of their fron bumpers) to get a spoiler to work on a Front wheel. And atleast 100mph to get the downforce to work at all. I don't think it's smart to drive with diffusers on the street, it just scream illegal.

Re: (Maness)
For those of you who said over 100 mph, pat yourself on the back. You were close. Its actually 135mph before any substantial amount of downforce is created by any kind of aerodynamics on a vehicle. The Geo probably just had a head wind and was on a slight down hill. For those of you who said rear down force isnt needed on a an FF car, shame on you. At high speeds, over 100mph, in most FF cars, Im refering to Civics and Integ's, the rear is prone to breaking loose regardless of suspension therefore a small amount of down force is needed. Now for those pep-boys specials that make your car into a shopping cart, they probably cause more wind resistance than any actual down force, not to mention dead weight. Dead weight = BAAAADDD! So basically to each his own. If you want to be an idiot about it just make sure you dont kill any kids in the process.

my friend says his car tops off at 106. and he says hes gonna get a govenor removal chip for zxtuner.com that can raise the yop speed to 135. dont know hy he would want it the only place straight enough for that around here is the interstate. and he says hes gettin a 16+ hp chip.
