As the title reads. Am I better off searching for a shell online, or getting my *** out and junkyard crawling?

So my goal is to spend no more than $800 on the frame. 92' hb cx or dx. Will probably have 140k+ miles on it. No need for working engine/tranny. Or can I find cheaper?

I have no clue on how much to spend on a shell

Usually the ones at the junkyard are pretty wrecked. What are you wanting it for? Daily driver (wont work you cant get it licenced), track car (dosent matter if its wrecked just fix it and rig it together) Try the buy and sell or your local paper ( good luck on the 800 bucks tho)

What do you mean, "wont work you cant get it licenced".
If you are referring to the fact that it has a "salvage" title, this is not entirely true. If you fix everything needed to pass inspection for a clean title you can then make it a daily driver.

besides the fact that the bodies are usually pretty beat up, as stated above (how many cars do you know that go to the junkyard with good straight bodies??) you will also have to deal with a salvage title, whereas if you purchase from someone say, with a blown motor or something, you will have a clean title to work with.

and i could be wrong, but i think what he meant about it not being legal to drive is that most of the time when the cars are at the junkyard long enough they end up taking the vins off... dunno though, either way IMO you are better off looking elsewhere. good luck!

Around here, you can't buy a shell from the junkyard. Insurance companies banded together and it is outlawed. The junkyards can only sell you half of a car at a time and no title is available. If you bought the front & back, then welded them together, then used it offroad only... Better to just buy one from somebody. And you can get them for $800 if you're quick. I missed a 92 hatch that "needed motor work" for $500 by an hour about a year ago.

I can't find a junkyard in cali that has a whole frame left. I was looking for a rear disk brake conversion but can't find a thing.

I'm serious I only paid $900 for it. Anyways, there is a huge honda yard around Charlotte, NC called Beavers Honda. I can find the number if you want.
