Please get a spring compressor, you can rent them free like was mentioned above. I'd hate to hear of someone getting hurt form information they geathered here.

I'm all for safety but the spring compressor I rented was difficult to use, time consuming and not nearly as safety inspiring as I hoped. After destroying it on the first shock, I got me a pillow, stuffed it in the bottom of a garbage can and shot the other 3 springs into it. I'll betcha 9 out of 10 OE springs on this board have been removed with this method and I haven't heard of 1 injury yet. Just be smart, you'll be fine.

I have never used a spring compressor but I've done it numerous times.
If you haven't done it b4, I would recommend a spring compressor.
They are not essential.

Ok but be advised, i do not recomend you doing this. In this pic you want to point that end into something like a bucket and unscrew the nut untill the spring unloads and shoots the nut, allen wrench, washers, and upper shock mount off. It's not going to come off slow so be ready, you would probly jump when it happends lol.

5mm allen wrench! 3/16 may strip as it's the wrong size. Honda=metric

i don't think that method sounds too safe. You mean you are going to be unscrewing and then boom it all pops off?

Yep, all that energy has to go somewhere. I put the spring on it's side against a step in my garage with the hat facing something soft and my foot holding it firmly against the step. Then I make sure I keep my hand out of the way so it doesn't get nailed.

Your best bet is to go to Autozone and get the spring compressors and do it the right way.

I just didn't want him to strip the inside out.....believe me, I've done it before even using the right tools....it sucks!

its safe...if you get shot it will hurt.....but the best way to do is the tire you took off lay that on the ground put the end you gotta shoot off against the tire have the one person stand on the spring and then keep loosin till you feel its gonna pop off..then slow loosen it till it shoots..if you do it fast it will shoot harder then if you slowly loosen it

Damn the whole poppin thing would be scaring the **** out of me my rear springs were really tight up in there, even with a spring compressors(i was on my 2nd loaner) i couldnt tighten it enough without breaking it to get the springs out. I just cut the springs off with a torch, i cant say it was the safest way but it got the job done.

Spring compressor is like a seatbelt. You may not think you need it, but when you get injured without using one you'll wish you had one on.

How about leaving the springs attatched to the car with the car still on the ground, the weight of the car helps to hold the springs down. Take off the bolt, then slowly raise the car up and then procede to take off the already loose lower shock bolts. Then finaly take the whole assembly off.

I lowered 3 civics and went from stock to aftermarket and have never used a spring compressor I just made sure that the top of the spring assembly shoots toward something soft like padding or a rolled up carpet or somethign and it shoots out like 2 to 3 feet that's it!!!
