Re: DMV & Engine Swap (mysterysol)
Yeah, they can give you a ticket for having a different motor in your car. In San Diego, the cops actually take a class on identifying import modifications, they know a lot more than most people think. If the motor is legit, American spec, is the same year or newer than your Del Sol, and will pass smog/visual, you can take it to a California state Referree. They'll inspect and smog your car, if it passes, you pay $35 for the inspection, and $10 for a sticker that says your car has been tested and meets requirements set by California Emmissions. It's definately worth it. I've been pulled over a couple of times since I put my car together, when they pop my hood and start getting happy about the DOHC VTEC valve cover, I just point to my Referree sticker which has the block number, intake and header carb #'s, and all they say is have a good day, thanks for cooperating, and I'm out.

Re: DMV & Engine Swap (VTEC CX)
if I got the JDM B18c engine, it can not be legalized becasue, it is not US spec. Right? What do they do if I can't leagalized my car? Do they take my car away, salvage, or ask to put back the original engine?
thanks a lot

you have to get your car refferied, you get some paper work saying that the motor in your car is legal and everything else on it is to. they give you a little sticker to put in your door jam too

It has to be a USDM B - Series motor or it is illegal. To make the swap legal you have to use a 93 or newer USDM B - Series motor, matching ECU, and all the smog equip. that came with the motor.

its not even worth getting a jdm engine if you want to legalize it. Jdm engines are need to be made obd complient and you need to get all kinds of smog equipement. It isn't cheaper then usdm after all of that.
The motor has to be the same year as the car or newer.
Some tips for the referee, which happens to be the only way to get the sticker.
Make sure all wiring looks factory. Any wires that you have to extend, make sure they look the same way and are in wire loom.
Make sure your IDLE and TIMING are at factory specs.
Make sure you have have the right ECU for the motor, none of that obd1 to obd2 adapter crap.
And make sure everything is CLEAN. It will make the refs job much easier. After you pass the ref, start modding

Re: DMV & Engine Swap (mysterysol)
Would it be illiegal if I have a 99 gsr engine, but made everything ODB1?
Is this legal, or should I tell the ref that it is a 95 motor?

Re: DMV & Engine Swap (mysterysol)
it seems like I better buy another car when I have my money and sell my del sol cuz it is too much complicated. Maybe Suabaru WRX or Type R. That way everything will be legal, so I don't have to deal with those haterz (cops). What you guys think?
thanks
