It appears that on your cluster, the LED didn't illuminate the whole cluster?
Another question, do you need to buy aftermarket base for it? Or can you just buy #74 LED and put that in your OEM base?

The same places where the stock illumination is is where the LEDs illuminate. There is not change in that.
You do not have to buy the aftermarket bases, but it makes life that much easier.

Re: (thisisareallylongusername)
thanks for the write up, i did this in red LED's for my cluster. works perfectly, they just are a little dim to me. if you go red LED's i'd suggest buying them from the website fryguy190 posted, they seem nice and bright in his pic.
i'll post up pics as soon as my camera starts working again.
but again, nice write up

Stock lights create hot spots too!

Not really. The climate selector switch looks awful after this swap. I'll never do that again. There's only two bulbs in there and LEDs are directional so they don't scatter the light well. You can't even see the symbols to the outside edges. To balance the light out you'd have to modify the housing and string out some additional bulbs.
The cluster also looks pretty silly with hot spots. Amber LEDs seem pretty cool until you sit in a 01 Civic EX (my girlfriend's car) and see what a REAL amber cluster looks like. Without lighting up the needles and balancing the light out vs just reusing the stock bulb locations, this mod is a sad mockery.
My Advice: don't use LED's. Replace your tired-old blue covered bulbs with whatever upgraded bulbs you can find of whatever color you prefer. You'll be happier with the end result.
Great write-up though. Way better than the previous cluster LED swap write-up.

74-xHP Wedge Base LED Bulb
74-xHP3 Wedge Base LED bulb
would those bulbs spread the light out more?

Wow good question!
But for the A/C controls and such I'm going to use cold cathode tubes to light up the entire panel. I might as well do the job since one of the bulbs are already burnt out.

Re: DIY: EG Cluster and Dash Lighting Modifications
I just completed this DIY and for some reason my cluster doesn't light up the same way yours does. I replaced all 6 bulbs from superbrightleds.com. I have an EG.
Any idea what happened?

I believe there are a few in backwards.
He says to remember they are polarized, but more specifically, they are light emitting DIODES, which only work one way in a series.
Just flip them around and you should be fine.

Great thread. I like the way the red looks since it's not as bright as the white. I like green, but would green LEDs be bright enough at night?
