i am one paranoid motha f**ka when it comes to detonation. every single day i listen to my motor for any noises. i even got me a stethoscope for engines and my timing is retarded. i dont know wat it is but, i always worry about it.

just wanna know wat ppl know about detonation and if they have had any instances where they experienced it. who has had any mishaps due to detonation.

anything about it would help..........

What does detonation means.

when the cylinder tempurature is high enough that it ignites the fuel before the time the cylinder gets its spark. this puts alot of stress on the internals of your motor and could cause problems or motor malfunction.

i am not too knowledeable about the exact explaination but that is the basic idea.

please correct me if i am wrong.

I am just as paranoid, but im not sure what to listen for. Is there a distinct sound that occurs during detonation? This might be a stupid question, but so many things could make so many noises, and i'd like to know what is what.

i think i would notice if my car is detonating (although i am not too sure) but it would be different from regular motor noises.

just listen for pinging or knocking........ on another note......i turned a rod bearing before and i thought maybe i was detonating like crazy but i was wrong....is detonation that loud? dont know if you heard something like that b4.

Detonation sounds like a rattling, (almost like a very loose valve adjustment) but under load. It is caused by the fuel igniting early (IE timing advanced) and causing a lean condition. Lean conditions create hotter walls than normal. Get your timing checked ASAP. Maybe your belt has jumped a tooth.

my timing is correct. i have it set at retard. i know how to correct timing.

i am worried that i may not be gettin enough fuel to my motor and i might be runnin lean. because in the morning my car would start then automatically cut off. it doesnt start up good until the motor is warmed. i have checked the fast idle and thats good and i cleaned out the TB blah blah blah. and also when the motor is cold there is the knocking and pinging sound associated with detonation. which goes away when the motor is warmed.

most of with any kind of mod. is aware of any slight sound out of the ordinary and inspect every little new squeak and knock..with any new motor mod ull hear some kind of new noise..and of course ull want to know what it is..however, solving the nuisence can be somewhat troublesome..yup, detonation is definitly a biggy u have to listen for..knocking when the motor is warm d up
