d16z6 transmission on D15b8?
Just wondering if anyone has ever used a d16z6 transmission with a d15b8 engine. Not the best setup, I know. But I just figured it would be interesting to see if the closer gears at least help, or if they're overkill for daily driving.
I figured it might be overkill considering the narrow power band, not to mention the 70 hp rating.

I've wondered about that too. The Z6 redline is 7200 and I believe the B8 is 5500
or so - quick math says that would make for some pretty short gears, and very
active shifting around town if you know what I mean.
I'm sure it would be worthless on the highway.
Sounds kinda fun
Also I've wondered how the B8 would respond to boost. Peak torque of the little
8v motor comes at 2900 rpm IIRC. Add the fact that most people get rid of these
engines for cheap and it almost seems like a good idea.
I'm sure someone here has used a Z6 tranny on a B8 motor. Hopefully
they see this thread.

yeah, i hope so too. I figured the gears might too short, but somewhat fun. It'd be interesting to hear if anyone has done it

i would just wait it out and get a d16z6 engine and put a d15b7 tranny into it.. that's what i have now cuz my z6 tranny went out.. it's still a lot of fun and i'm only at 2600 or so at 70 mph. great gas mileage!

the z6 is NOT long geared the final drive is 4.25 just like a y8. which is almost the same final drive of a gsr tranny at 4.266. the higher the number the shorter the gearing is. my y8 cruising at 70-75 mph on my y8 is like 3500rpms..

You aren't taking gears into account here. Final drive isn't the only factor here. The gears themselves are relatively long. Sure it's short for a D-series tranny, but start comparing it to a B-series and it's going to look a lot longer. You do realize Aquafina builds Honda transmissions professionally right?

its pretty damn close if u ask me... just slightly longer through gears 3 through 5.

Re: d16z6 transmission on D15b8?
It is long geared. Very close to an LS. Just so happens to be the second shortest D trans, but still long.
My Y8 cruising RPM at 75mph is 4,350 RPM. That is with 195/55/15's and 4.058 FD (1.000 MFactory 5th gear). Stock Y8 at 75mph with the same tires is 3,200 RPM.
GSR FD is 4.40 btw.
Edit: You posted ratios before I finished this post. There is a big difference. I've run almost every combination of gears possible in a D series so I know from firsthand experience. Go to teammfactory.com/gear-calculator and compare them. You can see the top speed of each gear as well as the RPM drop and overlap the ramps of the two transmissions on a nice line graph.
