there isnt a difference between vtec and non vtec dists. just the obd1 vtec head has a different bolt pattern that every other d series head

Non vtec distributor won't bolt up. There is an adapter plate that you can buy but it's about the same price as buying a new z6 distributor.

What? Do you have a link to this adapter plate?
You can hack yours up, and it will fit. As far as I know, the car will run well. The internals, however, are NOT the same. There was a thread on d-series.org months ago describing how a non-vtec distributor will make a vtec engine run poorly, even if it seems to be fine. No further evidence has been introduced (again, as far as I know), so I think that might have been an oddball case.
If you just want to be able to drive the car, a hacked up non-vtec distributor (of the same obd generation) will be perfectly fine. I have never had a problem with mine.
