d16z6 map sensor problems
i have a 93 hatch with a d16z6 swapped into it. i got it and it ran ok broke up alittle bit in low rpm but it had a map sensor code and o2 sensor code. i put a new map sensor on it and it wouldnt idle but it fixed the code. then after starting it a few times the code came back and it ran ok again. I checked the ecu and it was a p07 vtec e ecu so i figured that was the problem and picked up a p28. It ran good at first but ran rich in vtec and had a map sensor code again as the only code. I just replaced the map sensor so i dont see how its the map. It ran decent for a few weeks then started hesitating at low rpm. Now it wont idle again and is pouring out smoke when i start it and hold the throttle in and sounds like a 2 step. Anyone have any idea whats wrong with this damn car?

Re: d16z6 map sensor problems
adjusted the throttle cable today and got it idleing again, the cables all stretched and i need a new one. It smokes but seems to run decent. I took it out and it was breaking up/misfiring between 2-3k under partial throttle or full throttle but if your on it just alittle bit it doesnt. I hit vtec and it pulls hard and doesnt break up at all but leaves a nice trail of smoke behind it. i dont wanna spend the money on a new map sensor and have it do the same thing like before

Re: d16z6 map sensor problems
Have you diagnosed the MAP sensor as being faulty, other than the CEL code? Double check it with a separate test that is in the factory manual first. Same thing goes for the O2 sensor with checking that separately as well.

the o2 sensor wasnt working because the p07 ecu needed a 5 wire o2 and it was a 4 but when i put the p28 in the code for o2 went away. How do i test the map sensor? i dont have a manual

There is a manual available for partial download in the FAQ's sticky above. Have you cleared the CEL codes out as you have plugged and played with the sensors?

Re: d16z6 map sensor problems
yea i cleared the codes. Now when i start the car it idles real low like 100-300 rpm and no check engine light on, it reaks of gas and if i hold the throttle steady at like 2k it goes bwam bwam bwam bouncing between 2k-2.5k. when i go to drive it it is real jerky but clears up and seems to run decent till i stop again. After driving for a few minutes the check engine light comes back on and it idles steady at 1k and sounds like its missing alittle if i rev it and when accelerating between 2k-3.2k then clears up and is fine. It still smells like gas tho but not as bad as when the CEL's not on.... The CEL is only throwing the map sensor code still..

Re: d16z6 map sensor problems
it sounds like a map sensor problem check in engine harness and see if u got the correct got the correct wires to each terminal they maybe switch around there should be a white wire, green and white wire, and a yellow and red wire at the connector end. also u wanna check your vaccum hoses to and check for vaccum at the sensor if it does not hold vaccum replace it. if all check ok check your wiring u may have open or short in the wiring harness hope that helps

Re: d16z6 map sensor problems
im gonna check for any leaks in the manifold/throttlebody and double check the wires and makes sure their not shorting anywhere. Also gonna replace the spark plugs and wires thanks for the responses everyone

Re: d16z6 map sensor problems
when i hear smoke, i think of your intake manifold gasket mite have a small leak. Normaly coolant and one oil passage run into it from the right side as u look at the motor. I have a very very small worn out intake manifold gasket there before, it smoked a little bit and caused a miss fire on the 2 closest cyl to the dizzy... simple gasket fixed it also way to check is pull your plugs, and see if they are wet, coverd in oil or coolant... just another idea and good luck man

Re: d16z6 map sensor problems
The MAP sensor has a 3P connector. With the key in ON(II), the two outer terminals in the wire harness plug should have 5V to body ground and also to the middle ground wire terminal in the plug. Start there and post your results.
