Default d16y8 vtec gaskets soleniod

I am new to the board and pissed that you have to ask the dealer about a specific gasket that is not shown on schematic. This is my mission on joining this very wise yet sometimes rude board.Love it though----If you have a 96 -2000 d16y8 that has an oil leak and it always runs down the side of your transmission with hood up looking at it towards radiator side.Replace your distributor or--- DIZZY--- o-ring--Retime with timing light to specs--still a leak?replace vtec body gasket with built in screen called spool on schematic.--Finally- my biggest pain in *** was vtec uppper solenoid gasket -not lower -with part--- 36172-po8-015-uppper right below solenid-Very hard to see the leak but remember this part no. for y8 oil leaks.I'm only posting trying to help & couldn't find it except from dealer. This is the upper vtec solenoid gasket and it will leak and fool hell out of you to find it.

Are you talking about the VTEC solenoid gasket? you can get it at Honda, thats what I did when mine was leaking. I did that and the dizzy gasket at the same time.

Ive heard people mention NSX gaskets when this topic comes up, whats going on?

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the v-tec solenoid on the back part of the engine?

The part that I'm talking about is right on the tranny and really looks like a v-tec solenoid on it's side. According to the OP, he said it's called V-tec body gasket or spool on schematic.

Iguess I'll post a pic tomorrow of what I'm talking about.

Thanks

Yes- The vtec is on back left of head but oil will leak down front of transmission and fool you.Replace the distributor o-ring and both vtec body gasket AND solenoid gasket.Spray well with brake cleaner to totally clean away oil and test drive-Duke

Thanks! I've ordered a distributor o-ring. But, all I can find is a v-tec solenoid gasket. I can't find the V-tec body gasket. Do you have a website or part number?

Thanks

I could have used this info about 6 months ago. I had a bad oil leak and did multiple compression test because I thought it was my head gasket, changed the dizzy o-ring, had to rethread a valve cover hole beacause I thought my valve cover was to loose and tightened the hell out of it. and just a month ago I found out that they make a die that you put in the oil then take a drive and then look for the leak with these special glasses and bingo it was the vtec gasket. and while looking for the part number hondas web site doesn't show it for 96-2000 but shows it for 92-95 models. they all fit the same.

that oil leak is misleading, I had oil running down the front of my engine so i never looked on the back.

To explain further-d16y8 upper vtec gasket 36172-po8-015---lower vtec body at head gasket 15825-p2m-005- distributor o-ring--30110-pa1-732.You would think the oil leak would run down the back of engine but it runs in a channel right down the front where the trans. meets the engine. Also on the automatic trans makes you think its the two transmission solenoids on top side--Duke

Thanks a lot Duke! Finally got my stuff ordered. See, I thought that the solenoids on top of the trans were leaking but, yea, your explanation makes sense.

And for other people searching for this: 36172-po8-015, change the "o" to a "0" (zero).

OK this helped out a lot. parts stores kept telling me to use "black form a gasket" i did on the distributor cause that's all i thought it was. but that leak is now fixed. but could it have caused oil to also leak on my alternator?

f'ing a. I was thinking I had a head gasket leaking but couldn't find a spot where it was coming from..had wiped oil from the solenoid casing once..

does anyone know if the vtec doesn't get used(you don't tach over 4200 or so) if it won't leak? i've wiped the front of the engine/tranny and it hasn't leaked down it again but i've been babying it. what's the difference in these gaskets?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OEM-H...item588ee7e079

Do I need both??

I had mine replaced and I still have a leak, I am guessing it is my head gasket.

If the oil leak is consistent with the solenoid leaking, it may be a cracked solenoid....seen a few people that said they replaced the gaskets, still leaked, and then took it honda and found out the solenoid was cracked.

It will still leak regardless of your RPM's. Oil still flows through the body. The solenoid is what actuates and releases the oil to the head activating VTEC. Oil will still flow through the assembly.

How do you know if the solenoid is cracked?

uzername: thanks, i kind of figured that but i wasn't sure. Do you know if the smaller of the two gaskets I linked to is for the top of the solenoid? I ordered the lower body gasket(the one that looks like a snow man) from Honda today but they don't sell anything for the top, told me it wasn't servicable.

motegi: I'm not certain, all i know is that person posted on here or civicforums that after putting two gaskets on in one month it came out to be the solenoid was cracked. i imagine they pressure tested it?

The snowman gasket is the typical serviceable one. To determine if it cracked I guess you need to inspect it and see if there are cracks or oil coming from the casing I guess.

Im not sure. Its been a while since I worked at Honda, or even worked on one. Sorry. I would just clean everything up real good, and pay close attention to it.
