Default d16y8 transmission question

hey guys i drive a 98 ek coupe and i have had a problem with used transmissions in the past. i going to start at the beginning, which is i bought the car knowing that i will have to replace the transmission because 3rd gear was bad. so my idea was that i swap it with a z6 transmission (heard they have stronger shift forks) the z6 transmission as i have found out from my transmission teacher has a bad input shaft bearing and the guy i bought it from would not refund me but that is besides the point. so i got a y8 transmission because it was cheap and the guy told me no noise or grinds (he at least wrote down and signed a paper saying he will refund me for anything again besides the point). i need to know if there is a way to check and make sure there are no problems with this transmission. my teacher told me i had 50 miles left by the noise when i took him for a ride. that was 800 miles ago but i dare not go farther. anyone have any ideas on how i can check this that would be greatly appreciated.

Install the new tranny and fill with GM Synchromesh. There's only one real way to verify a trans without taking it apart and inspecting the internals, and that's by driving on it.

there is no way to check for some sort of play in it? i know it will shift fine and hard because it has shifter arms and a shifter and for some reason it came with both cv ends not the whole shaft just the ends were stuck into the tranny it was also filled with fluid and it shifts fine but i am more worried about the input shaft there is no way to check for play in the bearings or anything like that?

Yes you can break apart the case and measure everything out per the factory service manual. If you take the shafts off you can spin the input shaft bearing and make sure it's good. I drove my car with a bad ISB for ~60k miles without a problem. It doesn't have a time limit it will go when it goes. Honestly it's pretty easy to change the ISB so might as well buy the $30 bearing and change it vs keep buying sketchy transmissions.

Yup, take it apart and inspect, or drive on it.
