It should be pretty much straight foward.
I went from a y7 to a y8 and ran the y7 ECU for awhile but it didnt run too well.
Bought a y8 ECU for less than a 100 dollars.

And the only real hard thing with the swap is wiring VTEC from the Solenoid and Vtec pressure switch to the Pinouts on the ECU.

Unless you plan on switchin the whole harness, which i dont think is needed.

Don't use your Y7 ECU, the fuel mapping isn't the same, and Y7 won't try to activate VTEC. Use the Y8 ECU, and it's 100% straight drop in except for wiring up VTEC which is nothing more than a few wires.

Y8 motor uses a 3-wire IACv, and the y8's ecu (P2P) reads for a different evap system, that all 96-00 Dx,LX,CX 's dont have, only the EX. It will throw a CEL and you wont pass inspection UNLESS:

You obtain the charcol canister (has electronic valve on it) and 3-way valve from the honda parts department or a junkyard.
Also... this extra valve is not on the wiring harness, so you will need to wire it in by hand or get a 96-00 EX harness.

Between different placement of the 2nd 02 sensor, a 2 wire IACv, and different plugs for the EVAP system, and VTEC, its much easier to just get a y8 harness, save yourself the trouble.

So what is the actual CEL that it would throw?
cause when i had my y7 ECU on the y8 that was in my car the only CEL i had was 45, too rich/lean and i couldnt figure it out.

is wiring VTEC from the Solenoid and Vtec pressure switch to the Pinouts on the ECU, like doing a mini-me? or can i just run a p2p ecu without wiring up vtec.

Running a p2p ECU with a y7 harness will give you a CEL for the Idle Air control valve, the VTEC components, and EVAP valves. Your getting a CEL with the y7 ecu because the fuel maps between a y7 and y8 are not the same.

Believe it or not, a y8 (direct) swap into any 96-00 that had come with the y7 is allot easier said than done, theres a few OBD related issues that are not only a real pain, but hamper your car's legality for state inspection. I would know, i went thru all the bullcrap for a few months. Hands down, OBD2 is a real pain in the ***. Id recomend you run the y8 with a jumper and a p28.

Would i be able to run my y8 with just a obd2-obd1 jumper harness and a p28 without a chip? But would it be ok to run around on the virgin p28 until it gets chipped and tuned? (geting ready for a tune and i need the p28)

Virgin p28 should run it fine, it reads for a 1.6l SOHC VTEC motor, abd best part is you have a slightly lower VTEC crossover, and a slightly higher limiter. I hate my p2p, it hits VTEC at 5700, and has a 7200 limiter, where as a p28 is like... ~5200 crossover with a ~7400 limiter.

Differences are that a p28 is OBD1, so it doesnt read for as many parts as a P2P (obd2) would, such as secondary 02, EVAP valves, and a few other small things, i cant remember off the top of my head.
