D16Y8 clutch going out
well it lived its life, i'm the 3rd owner and I learned to drive manual on this car, obviously I slipped it a little more than needed for the 1st week taking off from a stop. Anyways when I bought it I got a squeak that seemed to be coming from the slave cylinder. The car sat for months and when I went to drive it 3rd gear grinds. No its not me I had very experienced drivers take it for a spin and it did it. Took it to a mechanic to see what they would say and they said my slave cylinder isnt building enough pressure. They also recommended replacing the clutch and throwout bearing. $836 for parts and labor yeah thats crazy. So I said no and kept driving it. Well now just driving i'm getting a clutch burning smell. Its faint not like when you really rev it and burn it. The car seems to pull fine though the RPM dont rev up and fall back down. But I know its on its way out. So can I change all of this out myself? I'm new to car mechanics but I know just about everything about motor cycle engines and I have done many clutch changes and engine rebuilds. So with some motor knowledge could I do this job myself? Or will I end up having my car sitting for weeks because I took it apart and cant figure out anything?

Re: D16Y8 clutch going out
i dont think changing a clutch is very hard man. if you do your research and go by the books you should do fine, just be sure to use the proper torque specs when putting the pressure plate on! i think 55-60lbs? flywheel is around 90lbs? but its been a while so dont quote me. oh and if 3rd grinds thats prob ur tranny not clutch so id invest in a new tranny since they are fairly cheap on a sohc. (but you failed to mention what car you have!)

Re: D16Y8 clutch going out
it's generally recommended to replace the slave cyl and master cyl at the same time if money allows. this keeps trash from the master cyl getting into the brand new slave cyl, and eliminates other posibilities for failure.
if you know how to bleed hydrolics (brakes.. and the like) and you can turn wrenches without stripping bolts (my guess is you can) then doing the slave cylinder and master cylinder should be no issue at all.
the clutch on the other hand is a bit more involved... if you feel that you have the equipment and mechanical cognisance to remove and replace your transmission.. that's 80% of a clutch job! grab your choice of repair/service manual and give it a shot.
parts should run you about $350-400 for master and slave cylinders and an OE clutch kit. $836 quoted by the repair shop must be labor included...

yeah parts cost came out to $400 or something and labor just added up to that. My motor isnt even worth that much as a whole lol

Re: D16Y8 clutch going out
I just did the clutch on my dad's 93 del slo. The motor was a D15B7 (quite similar to yours I think, hydro tranny too.)
I coulda done it in one day (8hrs) but I was drinking and messin around and it started raining so it took two days.
It's not that hard to do, you could probably do it yourself. I didn't think I could then I pulled it all apart and was shocked at how simple it ended up.. I barely used the manual but I skimmed it beforehand. (Haynes manual btw, **** the Chilton)
The cost for the new clutch was 168usd from Checker, then there was transmission fluid (SAE-30.) If I recall it was under 200usd for parts but that was an older 1.5L motor. (Same parts tho, pretty much)
That clutch feels very nice now... :D
And I didn't have any torque wrenches, just a long and short breaker bar and respect for the cars nuts. (lmao)
Good luck
