d16y6 into vx.... quick question about ecu

Default d16y6 into vx.... quick question about ecu

okay we just swapped a d16y6 from a del sol into my vx, as of right now we still have the p07 computer in there. i have a p28 on the way. now when my car is warmed up and i am sitting at a light, i go to take off it will puff out some smoke, sometimes grey sometimes blueish, now my main question is would my computer have anything to do with this or did i buy a shitty engine?? please help

your ECU is going to be running that engine really lean at times. Which could damage the engine.

Are you running the VX O2 sensor with the P07?

CEL on?

initial acceleration smoke, maybe the ECU but it may not be.

im not driving the car now.. im waiting on the p28. yeah im running the vx o2 sensor. the CEL is on , we ran the code and its vehicle speed sensor.. god i hope its the ecu..

the VSS shouldn't be a problem with the swap.
are you sure it's not broken? (the VX VSS should work in the y6 trans as well)

BTW, VSS CEL will cause limp home mode. (see rich conditions and retarded ignition)
this is due to the ECU running the engine differently (both fuel and ignition values) for each gear.
the current gear is calculated based on vehicle speed and engine RPM.
there is a lot of other things based on vehicle speed. Personally I'd suggest fixing that problem asap.

okay but listen to this, it doesnt come on for about 5-6 miles after i start it up. then if i turn the car off, it goes away and same thing... sometimes it doesnt come on..

meaning your speedo doesn't move until 5-6 minutes after you start the car?

or your CEL doesn't come on until 5-6 minutes after you start the car?
CEL not turning on for 5-6 minutes is normal. The ECU has to guess when it's missing the VSS signal since there is no difference between sitting still for prolonged periods and having no VSS signal.
This is determined based on the engine running though cycles of RPM climbing and falling as you shift and a period of time.

recheck the code, if the speedo is working you wont have a code 17, i promise.

could the ECU cause this - yes
is the ECU causing this - no idea

white/blue smoke on acceleration usually means rich conditions.
does it do it when you change gears? (dead give away)

also a bad pcv valve can cause smoke like this.

worst case...
typically white smoke = coolant
blue smoke = oil

how many miles are on the engine? does the dip stick look like milky oil? is the coolant level dropping? might be a bad headgasket.


something else to remember. the VX ECU runs the engine super lean while cruising down the road. if you run this engine like that it will not last long.
get the P28 in there and drive the car only if you really have to. If you have to don't maintain a constant speed, accelerate or decelerate all the time. It feels stupid doing this but it prevents the ECU from jumping into the lean burn mode.

well, it really shouldnt be too lean. you have to figure when the CEL is on the ecu doesnt go into lean burn. funny thing is his vtec crossover at 2800rpm, haha, bet thats fun. anyways, w/ the p07 and 240s it shouldnt be lean unless he is romping on it, but the p07 timing maps are redicilously moderate, so in all actuality its probably rich while cruising. anyways, GET the right stuff then try to figure out whats wrong.

vx ecu's are the worst, because they are the econ model
put p28 obd1 in it, you be fine

thanks for all that info guys, but i have stated before that i am not currently driving the car, its sitting waiting on a p28 to get here, its already orderd and should be here any day, i was just asking in advance so i can rule out other things while i wait... with compression in each cylinder being 180 is that good or bad?

nothing you say or do at this point means squat. You need to put the right ecu in there and put the right o2 sensor in there....THEN you can have an idea of whats up.

i meant d16z6, and i put the p28 in today, throws a code 41 wich is o2 heater. i know it would since i have the d15 o2 in there right now, i still have to do the conversion, now it doesnt smoke as much and as often, but would the bad o2 cause it to smoke still?? throw excess fuel atleast?
