D15b OBD identification

D15b OBD identification
I have a d15b7 in my del sol, and I will be swapping to a D15B. My understanding is that D series swaps can be done with any other D quite easily, but I'm wondering if it will work. I now know mine is OBD1
This is what I have now.
See these relatively cheap, but it's not from the 90s so it has me thinking that it's not OBD1. this one is from a 01-05 Civic EX. It doesn't have the spark plug wires coming out like mine.
I have a gut feeling that I can't go with the one above and instead need to fork over a little more for something older like this 94 with the dip stick by the exhaust Manifold.
If I go with the one from the 01-05 civic ex I'll save like 400 but I have a feeling that it's Obd2 and that switching it to OBD1 will be a bitch.
Cheers

Re: D15b OBD identification
Both replacement motors you are picturing are vtec motors and your original motor is not.
The bottom motor is an OBD1 D15B vtec motor, so should only need to be wired for vtec and have the appropriate ecu.
The top motor is definitely obd2 and has coil on plug and will likely require a fair amount more than just wiring vtec and an ecu, as there is a sensor on the crank and I think there might also be a knock sensor too that the obd1 cars and wiring didn't have. It's a 1.7 liter motor from the 7th gen car.

Re: D15b OBD identification
I was just about to edit my thread and mention that, but yes I am doing a non Vtec to Vtec swap. Thanks, just as I suspected You recon getting one of those newer obd2 engines is not worth the time? They are considerably cheaper for some reason. Since I'm noob I think it will be best to just get the 94, Vtec harness and ecu

Their cheaper as they are probably more plentiful now.
The older the car gets, the rarer the parts become. The more the price tends to increase for demanded parts (i.e. JDM D15B vtec and dual vtec).
Just like in my area, D16Z6 parts are getting harder to find as they are sought after. The non vtec 1.5L parts of the 92-95 on the other hand are a dime a dozen.
01-05 is much newer than 92-95.

Re: D15b OBD identification
88-00 D-Series are interchangeable. Those are the ones you want. OBD2 starts in 96 but you can still use an OBD2 engine in an OBD1 car. What most people don't seem to understand is that the car nor the ECU cares what engine is installed. The ECU however does care if it is receiving signals from the sensors it's expecting to see. In other words correctly ensuring this happens is what is crucial.
