Alright HT Gurus-
My 95 DX Sedan keeps popping the driver side CV out of the diff. It looks like it is about 1/2" too short when I tighten the spindle nut, and pops out of the tranny.

I got frustrated and brought it to a shop. The "tech" (term used very loosely) said the tranny is from a different model.

I thought all d-series trannies were the same dimensions. If not, what axle do I need? Help please!!!

ive seen people use axels from an auto trans in a manual trans so its probably the wrong axle. did you try buying a new axle?

i have to disagree with the auto axle and man axle. i did an auto2man swap in my 90 crx and i never had an axle pop out.

possible the dust rings are missing?

i say stop being a cheap *** and buy a reman'd advanced auto axle for like $40 and call it a day

FYI this is a new cv joint. It worked fine for a while (splines mesh just fine) and just popped out one day cruising down the highway. Pulled it out and returned it to Advanced Auto Parts (lifetime warranty). This second one pops out every time I tighten up the spindle nut.

The tech said my car should have an S20 tranny, but mine has a P20. My research says P20 is correct (95 civic dx sedan).

I asked about possible bad motor mounts, he said all check good.

I'm at my wit's end...

advance auto lists them as all the same part number. which i know cant be right because the spines are different on the hub. id do some research. maybe give ur local honda dealer a visit.

Yeah, I went to Autozone last night and had them pull up part info for all combos. They said these re-manned axles are not always rebuilt right. I'm hoping it's just two short axles.

I thought all 92-00 d-series trannies had the same spline count in the diff. Regardless, the axle popped in- so the splines mesh.

My tranny is definately a hydraulic clutch tranny. The tech says I should have an S20 tranny, not the P20 installed. He says the tranny difference is my problem. That just doesn't sound right to me. All EG trannies should be P20-AXXX/P20-BXXX, right?

I'm gonna try to get the b#tch back tonight and do more research.

no some of the spines are different. i had the same problem when i went to autozone for axles. they gave me the wrong one. the splines in the tranny didnt fit with the axle. but that doesnt sound like the problem your having.

i believe the 88-91 civic axle is a bit shorter. I bet you have the older axle in your car

never, ever heard of a p20 trans. as far as i know for the single cam there's and s20 and an s21. i could be wrong tho. did you look at the trans itself? or r u goin on what people are tellin you? id double check.

This is just what the tech told me. Sounded fishy, like he was trying to rip me for a new tranny.

I'm getting the car back @ lunch today. I'll know then.

p20 one of the many names of 92-95 (and maybe 96-00). I don't even know where this s20 trans comes from. Maybe it's the label on the front of the trans (I never pay attention to those labels)

For example, 92-95 3door civic si mainshaft for the manual trans,

also
23441-P20-A00 GEAR, MAINSHAFT THIRD
23442-P20-A01 GEAR SET, MAINSHAFT THIRD

the s20 is in my 95 civic ex. ive seen them in the del sol si's too. ive just never heard of a p20 before. n ot to say i didnt think the was one.

It sounds like your axle is missing the snap ring on the splined end that goes into the tranny. The snap ring is what holds the axle inside the tranny.

Okay, kiddos-

There is a sticker near the passenger side fenderwell that said "C5F P20". I'm gonna ignore that.

What the douchebag tech should have seen was the REAL sticker near the engine code that says "S20 -2315341". Or possibly the stamp near the fill hole on the tranny that says "P20-A000". Both of those tell me I've got the right tranny.

He should have his ASE certification ripped up, turned into a paper mache' *****, and crammed up his ***.

I got the CV in question out, took it to Autozone, and compared it with their stock. There is a lot of deviation in length. I bought one that is a full 3/8" longer than the one I pulled out. I started to install it, but it's late and I'm tired.

quit whining about your mechanic. p20, s20 are the same thing, like I've already told you. PS: I've been right all along in this thread. So I see no reason for you to complain. You have a cable axle installed in a hydro trans car.

With all due respect, Bense (not just saying that, impressive builds) I'm just pissed the guy (an alleged Honda specialist) was so eager to quote me a price for a new tranny, rather than make a few bucks on an easy job.

If the axle was a cable tranny axle, then that's what Advance Auto had in a box for a hydro tranny.

But, I digress; thank you everyone for your inputs.
