Custom del sol fog light intake?
I want to use the fog light housings in my del sol front bumper as intake ports? I know that Pontiac did this with their Ram Air hoods. What are the pros and cons of having the air forced into the intake that way? Im concerned that at high speeds the throttle could get stuck open from the constant air pressure. Does the air need to be compressed into the intake manifold, like with a turbo or supercharger? I can't find any pics or info about it.

Re: Custom del sol fog light intake?
This is the answer from someone on another forum. My setup wouldn't be as complex as Mike Kojima's.
"It can be done, it will take a little aluminum tubing and some time and fabricating skill. The cheap and easy way would be to buy some Pep Boys DIY intake pipes and a good weekend. The better way is to do it like Mike Kojima did on his Sentra, THe Dog II, using intake tubes and silicone adapters. You will also need to fabricate a sealed box for the air filter. A ducted box forces all the air coming into the vent to go into the filter and the intake itself. If you don't seal the intake tract, air will just leak around the filter (choosing the path of least resistance) and negate the ram air effect. The only thing you will need to add is an AEM bypass valve: AEM Air Bypass Valve for Cold Air Intakes - Prevents Hydro-lock. With your completed ram air, if you hit a puddle you will suck in water. This can hydrolock your engine which will destroy it. The bypass valve will prevent this by opening and sucking air from inside the engine bay instead of the filter. It's cheap assurance that you won't suck water and ruin your engine (and with a properly built ram air, this is a real possibility since water will follow the same path as air). So the pros and cons?
Pros: More power, sweet looks, truly custom detail
Cons: Sucking up water, time and money spent
And that first con is easily remedied. If you do it right, the results can be
pretty dramatic."

Re: Custom del sol fog light intake?
Lol i have had the same idea for some time on my del sol but haven't done it yet I was thinking when I got Turbo putting one of these turbo funnels
And it can be done I seen some pro drag integras have the intake as one of the head lights

Re: Custom del sol fog light intake?
By the time the air passes through the filter and makes it's way through the bends
in the piping to the plenum, I doubt there will be much flow or pressure left. In
other words there won't be much ram air going on. We're talking highway speeds too,
I can't imagine that there would be much flow/pressure when you're driving around at
25 mph.
Although, what you will have is a true cold air intake system that you made
yourself. This could a fun project that shouldn't cost too much or cause
irreversible damage to the car. I say go for it.
I used to have a system similar to this that I made myself. Using a short
ram intake tube, I made a metal box shroud that was fed air by a pipe from
one of the bumper vents. I didn't notice any more power but it was a fun
project.
