Dead alternator?? Its an easy fix, not that hard.

But yes, a dead battery could be likely. Take your battery to Pep Boys to get tested.

So is it cranking over? When you put the new battery in it should have been able to crank. But if you just got a *click* then I would lean towards the starter itself. Odd, that the starter and the batter would both need replacing at the same time, unless I am missing something.

Sounds like a bad alternator to me. Especially if the car is struggling to stay on, that means bad alternator most of the time.

its cranking but not turning on.. i recently changed my oil pan about last week since my old one tore up from hitting a big rock off the freeway. im not sure what its called but it was inside where the oil pan is that seem to pump the oil out so possibly the oil pump? it was some metal piece. it was slightly dented but i installed the new oil pan on it anyways just so i could drive it home. could any of that affect why it stopped turning on a week later? i hear a lot of clicks also when i have the keys in the ignition to on. i dont remmeber if it clicked as much b4, haha.

i thought if the alternator is bad the battery would at least be able to start it up still though b4 it drains all the battery? i might be wrong tho

So you replaced the battery but it still won't crank? It just clicks?

If the alternator is completely toast, the car will always run off the battery with nothing to keep it charging. Every time you start the car it is using only the battery power to do so. Which is why I am wondering if its cranking over at all or just clicking, since you say you have replaced the battery.

Also if your alternator is completely gone the battery will die pretty much right away, which is probably why your old battery was dead.

make sure battery is fully charged, unscrew the charge cable from alternator (10mm or 12m??), making sure cable is not touching anything, then start up the car, this would isolate if the alternator grounding out the battery

"its cranking but not turning on" it's not the alternator.

it still can be a bad alt.. just the bad alt isnt the problem keeping him from starting the engine.
I think you do have a bad alt that killed your old battery.. have the alt tested..
but first you have to figure out why hte car wont start anymore.. I'm guessing you moved something when replacing the battery.

i dont think my alternator killed my battery.. my battery was already 4-5 yearish old. i got it checked and it came out bad so i went to the junk yard and replaced it with a working one or so they say.. lol

its trying to start but struggling.. i checked my dizzy and the cap is still good.. it isn't the starter by any chance??

if you haven't yet, check all grounds before spending any more money. if they tested your battery with a battery testing machine, a fail is legit. 4-5 years was a good run for that battery.

as general info for all to keep in mind, there is a difference between a "drained" battery and a "dead" battery. functionally they may act the same, but a "drained" battery can be recharged fully. a "dead" battery is unable to hold a full charge and/or cannot supply enough aperage when starting. this is usually due to corrosion of the internal plates or internal short.
