Icon2 Considering swapping an OBDI B18 into my 97 civic EX

hey guys and gals im new to the site and i have been reading as much as i can. i just bought my first civic and i am not used to hondas and would like to kno a few things. first off its an EX as i said in the title so that means it has the d16y8 rite??? i have read that the d16y8 is VTEC but nowhere on the valve cover or on the motor does it say VTEC so im a lil confused. also it has well over 250,000 miles, has had an unkown number of previos owners and burns oil so i have been looking into swaps. i don't have a huge bank account or deep pockets so i went to the local junkyard here in cincinnati and found a few b18b's and a b18a however they are the OBDI b18b's i believe because they are in pre 96 Teggys. basically im asking what would your opinions be on those engines as possible swaps into my OBD2a 1997 EK coupe? and also what is needed for the b18b OBDI swap such as axles, linkage, ECU,motor mounts, etc...i have read good things on here about that particular swap. im basically looking to making anywhere between 170-200 whp somewhere down the line after i build up the b18b. possibly forced induction in the future?? thanks for your time guys.

The D16Y8 that comes in the US 1996-2000 Civic EX doesn't say VTEC on the valve cover or engine. There is a VTEC solenoid mounted at the passenger/firewall corner of the valve cover though and there's an engine code stamped on the front of the block just to the passenger side of the header.

I know people swap OBD1 B18Bs into 6G Civics, but I don't personally have any experience with them or have much opinion on them.

Pardon me for saying but you are not used to Hondas. How do you know what a VTEC equipped car is supposed to feel like? It's not like a turbo or anything of the sort so forget what you may have read. It's an econo-box. A grocery getter. It's not made for horsepower or speed.

And you cannot even begin to compare a Prelude's H-series (either flavor) engine to a Civic's wimpy little D-series. They are 2 different beasts. If you thought just having VTEC was going to give you monstrous horsepower you were mistaken.

There's no comparison. Having owned both I can tell you that from experience. If you want that kind of power swap (B18C) or boost.

If you contemplating either please check the FAQs for swaps and forced induction or search the boards. Plenty of information to be had from either.

You're asking questions that have already been answered.

The D16Y8 doesn't have VTEC that you can really feel. In order to hear mine in my '98 EX I had to turn off the radio and the air conditioning.

The D16Y8 VTEC is completely incomparable to the H-series VTEC.

Go check for that solenoid and the engine code before you assume it's non-VTEC.

VTEC isn't for "Mass horsepower"

I've got new for you, on a b18b you're not going to make 170-200whp until you put a turbo on it. You would spend $3000-$4000 making a b18b put down 200whp.

Leave the motor alone, save up for a turbo, you can easily get 300whp on stock the stock b18b engine.
