Default Code 17 VSS

well, i was going down the road the other day with my cruise control going and and ended up having to slow down, well as soon as i hit my brake my speedo fell to 0 (upon cruise disengaging)

after driving it a bit my speedo came back on.

Now my speedo works perfectly EXCEPT when i get the car above 4500 rpms, at that point the speedo jumps around and eventually falls to 0 and my CEL comes on again.

i took out my VSS and looked it over, the gear looks perfect, the wiring seems ok and the connections as well.

the only thing i noticed is that i can move the gear up and down about a half inch.

my question is, is the gear supposed to move up and down or not, could this be the cause of my trouble? everything else looks good on the VSS as far as i can see.

Also, could my cruise control have something to do with this, or was that just a coincidence that it happened at that exact moment.

well i took it out again, took everything apart, bitch pin and all, there was some kind of lube in there before that has gotten really hard and sticky, i cleaned as much of that as possible and re lubed it and put it back in the car.

took car down the road redlined first and second and got to 5000 in 3rd and my speedo didnt mess up.

ill keep an update on this, so that if others have some VSS issues this may help them as well

I'm having the same problem with mine. Once the tach wire is unclipped its perfectly fine, but when its together the speedo drops to 0 when I brake sometimes. I'm assuming this is some electrical problem, but I can't figure it out. Maybe its just the vss itself, i don't know...
