Default Clunking/Popping noise

I will try to be as specific as possible.

I own a 2000 coupe civic si.

I have been having this clunking/popping noise recently, and quite often, which led me to beileve my axles were going out. Since, I have gotten my axles replaced with brand new ones and the noise is still there.

It happens when I'm at slow speeds or just taking off. When I get off of the gas abruptly, and when I push the clutch in, or let it out at slow speeds. Sometimes its one clunk, other times its 3 or 4 consecutive ones, like machine gun clunks haha. Because it happens at slow speeds, or when I engage the clutch it leads me to beilve its a clutch/flywheel assembly problem or a transmission problem (i hope not). It also happens sometimes when I crank the steering wheel to the left or the right at a stop and then let it go, it will pop once.

I have the power steering removed, and an aftermarket clutchmasters clutch and an aftermarket flywheel. Also a short shifter, but I havent had a problem with it before. At first I thought it was the axles, but obviously it wasnt. And then I thought it might be the shift linkage hitting something, like the oil pan or something. BUt its not that either. Since it happens the most when I push in/ take out the clutch, I think it has something to do with that.

Anyone know what I'm talking about, or have had the same thing happen? Its really annoying and starting to worry me. Thanks for your help.

check the front lca bushings... they are probably worn out
also, check the motor/tranny mounts (especially front lower ones)

I was having the same noise in my 97 HB. Turned out to be the upper driver's side motor mount. I couldn't see the busted rubber part until I removed the piece that connects the motor to the chassis. From what I've found ot, this is a high failure rate part in the hatchbacks for some reason.

bump again! Would the front lca bushings really be worn out in a car with 50k on it?

Doubtfull. I feel you as I get a clunk from time to time at low speeds too. Most of the time it's in higher rpm's in 1st and 2nd when I let off the gas quick and push in the clutch. It's not the clutch, flywheel, or tranny as they are all new. Also when I swapped in a Z6 we checked all the mounts and they where fine. Bump for you cause I got the samething going on .

EXACTLY the same problem...although mine happens at other times too...

Bcuz: Are you sure? I'll check it out. Should I get aftermarket ones or just ones from honda? I don't want them to go out in another few years...

Well if you go aftermarket you could also have a camber kit on it. That's one plus side.

same prob here too...1998 EX coupe. lowered 2.5 in the front. it happened right after i lowered my car that far with Omni's. I think its my upper ball joint from my camber kit...its a clunking sound that is ALWAYS there in the morning when i first drive my car...clunk clunk clunk clunk, then it goes away at higher speeds...or i just cant hear it....one or the other...

Its starting to **** me off. My cars in the shop now, I told them to check out my bal joints, and driver side suspension...so ill let yall know what they find...

this seems to be my problem too but i usually hear a few clunks when my car is turning or going over bumps. its not the CV or LCA bushings OR ball joints as I have replaced every one of them.

hmm, motor mount seems fine, they didnt find anything wrong with the suspension...i did tell them to tighten everything with the front susp. but they didnt say if anything actually needed tightening...

drives fine so far...if its going to do it again, it'll do it tomarrow morn when i leave for work. its when it always happens.

but yeah, so far, my car drvies good w/o clunking.

i put my car up in the air and tried to re-torque all my suspension pieces. i found all of em to be tight, so i just put it back down and torqued my wheels down and drove it and the sound stopped??? weird right??

yes, bumps, pot holes. It also happens when I just turn the wheel left or right and let go. It pops. When I am in first and let off the gas quick, or push/let out the clutch it pops. Only in the first gears though

I have the same problem in my 95 coupe it happens when I hit bumps and make left turns, I feel it might be my upper control arm.
