similar to the EX..long gears..1st gear will take u to about 20mph..2nd about 60mph..3rd about 110..4th will top you out..5th...iunno..let u cruise at 120?..saves gas pretty good though..

cvt's are automatic, and don't have gears, they're belt driven
get a 5-speed

I've seen a lot of posts on here about people's CVT trannies blowing up. Trying to source one is next to impossible, get the 5 speed so that you can just replace it with any d-series transmission in the event of failure.

Indeed. Crazy little transmissions that are FUN as hell to beat on (If you have a new one waiting to be swapped in). I beat on mine like crazy because i knew i had a 5spd waiting to get put in. (I did a Auto - 5spd conversion)

The cars are fairly light due to no sunroof, but also retain good features like power windows/door locks/ac/ps etc.

IMO It's a nice car. I picked mine up for $1,600.

I think you're the only one actually, lol. The hx is a good platform, with a y8 manifold and EX 5spd transmission they are usually faster than EX civics.

Honda's first-generation CVT was a piece of ****, and it costs a fortune to replace when it goes bad - that is, if you can find a replacement at all.

If you're intent on an HX, get the manual transmission. Cheaper, more reliable, and better mileage.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by KillerElfboy &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">of the 96-2000 civics, what color are their gauges? cuz i was looking at my friends and daytime the characters are white wiht like a purple layer along the edge. does it light blue or green?</TD></TR></TABLE>
All USDM '96-00 Civics (except the EM1) had the white/purple/red gauge faces. They illuminate white with the lights on. The EM1 had white/orange/red gauge faces that illuminated orange with the lights on. HX/LX/EX/Si clusters came with a tachometer, while CX/DX did not.

If you're getting an HX go with the 5-speed definitely. It's great for winning bets with your friends as to whether or not you can make 110 in 3rd gear with four other people in the car But seriously, I threw a t3/t4 Turbonetics turbo on my 98 HX on stock internals and she rides like a dream. Stomping any integra or other Hondas in my area, at least

Oh btw, if you're going with an HX, you should really try and find one with the stock 14" Honda Alloys. They're light, durable, and they look good as hell!

I have a 96 HX with the CVT, bought it w/ 104k mi and the trany was already going bad. Had it at the dealer and they told me that it was shuddering when it started to go because the Start Clutch needed replaced. The part was ~$300, labor was $500. I bought everything I needed to convert it to a manual for less than half of the total cost. Stay away from CVT

I'll echo everyone who is suggesting to stay away from the CVT auto - they are piles of ****.

Are you buying this car to leave mainly stock, or are you wanting to do major mods to it like engine work/swaps/boost?

If you want tone to mod get an EX. HX's are the fuel efficient models, so they have the most strict emissions requirements when it comes to how Honda programmed the computer, etc. The HX also has a fuucking $450.00 primary 5-wire oxygen sensor that you can't find an aftermarket replacement fro that works too - lots of fun if you need to pass state emissions scan tests in order to get a tag.

If you're buying one to not do crazy mods to then I'd suggest getting a 5-speed model and then just swap in a Civic EX 5-speed tranny.

Stock Civic HX with EX tranny = faster than stock EX.

another thing. the d16y5 vtec-e head has potential II did a lot of research on this cylinder head and FINALLY I am getting some help with some of the other guys on sohchonda.com (mainly amkrew)

the head is the same casting as a y8. regrinds on the cam are available from crower for $95 Or if you wanted to go with a normal vtec head you can just swap the rocker assembly + cam + intake valve springs and run a obd2a y8 ecu. all hx's are obd2a

I want a hx. if you swap to a ex trans your rpms will go up a few hundred, so when you're cruising at 75mph you won't be cruising in lean-burn mode.

if it were me. I would get a hx, lower it and call it a day.

but then again i still think about getting one of these ******* and doing some invisible drivetrain mods and kicking some stockclass autox ***

Nah i just want it for the mileage, if i could get away with tinting it that'd be enough for me.

How much would it cost to convert one from auto to manual?

Don't.

Just buy a 5-speed and call it a day.

Changning from auto to 5-speed trannies is a PITA - you'd need the tranny, clutch, pedals, all hydralic hard and soft lines, clutch master and slaves cylinders, ENGINE COMPUTER, etc. - it sucks.

Why would you even consider getting the CVT? Do you use your other hand to beat off while driving? Anyway, the stock HX wheels are baller as expletive, which is why mine got stolen. So if I were you, I'd buy a set of locking nuts if/when you get an HX. I love my HX, but it seems to be a target for vandalism. Kicked in fender, ripped off rear bumper, and the aforementioned wheels, all in the course of six months. But anyway, the HX 5 speed gets great gas mileage and chicks think they're sexy, so if you want to get laid, you'll get one.

the only time I can justify buying a CVT equipped civic HX is when it already has a blown transmission and you can get it for very cheap.

and I see you have ECU in bold, it took me about 6 months for me to get one on ebay, definitely hard to find! Also gonna need axles, flywheel, shift linkage, mount, gonna have to do some wiring as well. Unless you have easy access to this stuff, run away!
